this is the thing,on our little M&P buggy im sure it could do damage with the hinges
but you dont fold/unfold them with the kid or near them
Sadly some people aren't that intelligent...... OR they want to blame someone else for their mistake.

As promised, finally got round to taking a picture ... not the best picture - as it was getting dark

This is the Quinny Zapp in the boot .. it takes up about 40% of the available space, rather than some of the huge ones in this thread

Sooty to bump thread, bambino on way, n that's just the car due 3rd week march:) :) little one due august so looking at our options, quinny buzz or quinny buzz extra I think for us probably the latter as we can get a cream one to match the car :)

ello...

Just to add to this tome of info, we've been at John Lewis at Brent Cross trying a couple of prams in my Abarth 500. Gawd bless 'em for letting us try out stuff in our own car with not even a guilt trip.

A bit of context first. We're due a little one in June (baby, not another 500). Changing car is a last resort we'd rather put off. We wanted a pram with a flat bottom cot that then turned into a stroller later. We live in London, so using the busses and around busy streets is pretty important, daily car travel less so. M (my partner) doesn't drive, so when we need to bundle it into a car, there'll normally be two of us, and we don't intend to have to carry it in the car that much, maybe once a week, if that. But we've a small flat, so the thought of having one big pram for walking and one small one for the car doesn't sound fantastic. It needed to connect to a maxi-cosi car seat (freebie from friend).

God knows after all the research I feel I know more about baby travel system specifications than any mere mortal should, but finding out definitive answers about what fits in a Fiat 500 is flippin hard to come across.

The PLI Seed (Danish design, Fiat sanctioned, expensive new but cheaper on eBay) definitely fits 'cos Fiat and PLI say so, but as they're rarer than rocking horse poo, we weren't able to see one in person so it was off the list. iCandy Peach was in the running for a bit, until we saw it, because although it folded miraculously small (can't prove it, but pretty sure it would fit a 500), it looked a bit too much "bling hummer" for M's taste. Babystyle Oyster seemed pretty nifty, and some forum members say they fit their 500s, but again we couldn't really find one to test. Quinnys seem popular amongst 500 owners, but don't have a flat cot and three wheelers weren't to M's taste. We live in Bugaboo Bee country (swarms of 'em), but the same "flat cot bottom" problem comes up.

Get the idea? Yep, it's a minefield depending on your "requirements".

Anyway. Got it narrowed down to the iCandy Cherry, and the Bugaboo Cameleon. Huge difference in price, but between eBay and parents helping out we'll ignore that elephant in the room for the moment.

The Cherry doesn't have adjustable handle height - we're both pretty average height so it's not awful, but it seems a daft omission as when you jump on a bus, or in a lift, getting it as compact as it can be is a must. When folded it stands vertical on it's own (nice).

The Cameleon has a push bar that can flip over so you can push both ways, bigger tyres and suspension for the occasional muddy road (or snow - worth thinking about after the last few years), and does feel a little better put together (disclaimer - never lived with one). Plus the cot seems bigger so could last the whole first 6-7 months.

The good news? Miraculously they both fitted in the Abarth. That's only the chassis', not with the cot/chair attached, but I never expected that (hardly the pram choice at fault, more the choice of car!). Oh, I had the parcel shelf off as well. Less a shelf than a sliver anyway.

The Cherry didn't seem to want to allow the hatch to close, and other forum posts suggests it doesn't. But if you pop both wheels off (easy centre button), and "lean" the chassis so it's with the slope of the boot - it fits!

The Cameleon looks like it folds smaller, but of course the weird shape of the 500 boot makes looks deceiving, so I still didn't assume it would fit. The truth is it fits in with one back wheel off (popping it off is not at all hard, but a little more fiddly than the Cherry), and little bit of fine adjustment. With both back wheels off it fitted pretty easily.

Both prams span the whole with of the boot, and don't give you much extra room, but there's sure to be squashy room around them. Both fitted (eventually) without having to slam the boot - that never seemed wise. The Cherry cot is rigid, so that would have to be on the backseat next to the car seat. The Cameleon cot actually folds flatish with a couple of struts taken out, so "might" go in the boot with the chassis (cool). Full disclosure - if I had to throw either of these in the Abarth every day, I might consider either other prams or other cars, but for the scenario we have, a little faff is fine.

There you go - our pain reproduced here so that some other might ignore this battle to fight other ones.

Which one will we go for? Who knows. I think the Cameleon wins on all the features and the boot fit, but I suspect I also like it because it looks a little techie, while I think M prefers the look of the Cherry. M's decision in the end, I'll just help if I can.

Really nice write up. Lots of info with the pics (always helps) for future parents. Thanks for that. Personally, after 2 kids and numerous pushchairs I'd go for cheap/secondhand pram from birth, then switch to stroller asap. Lugging heavy prams around London, buses and in/out of boots really does your back in! Both my kids went to strollers from 6 months. They are happy looking around, I'm happy when my back doesn't complain! ;) Good luck with your purchase whatever you decide on! :)

I really hate to 'burst your bubble' but my sister-in-law having bought a mini cooper speced to the eyeballs struggled for 6 months with a newborn and a pram and all the bits that are needed and finally succumbed to a Passat 1.6 petrol with a proper boot. The woman that traded the funk white 500 that I just bought lasted 4 months before getting a 'normal' car. I can empathise with your determination that 'yes - I can get it to work'. When the babies grow up sitting in a car seat (they will like getting picked up in the 500) and don't need a pram and have no friends to bring home from school - then yes - it will probably work. I'm not too sure if the 500 can take 3 in the back legally but I do remember reading that someone had found a way.

:D Very true. Having posted already my experiences with different prams/pushchairs above I forgot to add that I've traded my 500 for Punto Abarth - just because of the size of the boot! (There was another reason that I wanted an Abarth and A500 didn't do it for me, but that is OT ;))

Just to explain to anyone driving along the M27 seventeen years ago and seeing a Toyota MR2 T Bar with a gurt big box sticking out through the roof- that was my wife who had just bought a baby high chair.

Where there's a will.....

The Babyzen by Recaro fits in a 500 or Mini boot.

It can be used as a stroller, or to take the infant car seat or a carry cot.

http://www.babyzen.com/index.php

We looked at it on the Recaro stand at the AutoSport show (15% off all Recaro products with free delivery) & it is great. Although we ended up buying the Recaro Akuna instead as it fits the Clio boot fine & in the Civic with ease but had no chance in the 500 Abarth when we tried it. Fitted fine in a Suzuki Swift Sport, but not a Mitsibushi Colt Ralliart. While looking at new cars recently we took it with us to ensure it was going to fit.

Of course it's one thing getting a pram in but when it leaves no room fir anything else that has to be taken into consideration.

Solid advice from both! To be fair I can't see us sticking with the Abarth for more than a year for those same reasons, but we're both too stubborn to swap it for practicality in the short term!

And yea, the idea was put forward for a cheapy pram then decide in 6 months - but said idea was shot down! It always works out one way or another...

Thanks all!

Continuing on my 'where there's a will there's a way' theme, how about this for ingenuity?

I took this photo in France a few years ago.

Bump!:D

As mentioned last week I said I would contribute to this thread.

We have got a Maxi Cost/BebeConfort Streety travel system which we have been very pleased with so far. It comes with a whole load of features (including Maxi-Cosi car seat) and has plenty of storage as well - not bad for £250 when you think how much some cost.

The best part of it is how little space it takes up in the back of the 500. It's not quite as compact as the Quinny Zapp, but in all fairness it is a much chunkier design so you can't expect miracles.

We managed to fit in a weekly shop, a couple of coats and some other stuff as well. Of course you need to be smart with how you load stuff up, but it's more than doable.

Overall I would recommend this system for any 500 owners who may be expecting kids/have got kids!

Hi Everyone,

I just thought I'd add in my thoughts and knowledge to this one!

We've just had our little one (6 weeks old tomorrow!) and i ordered my Fiat 500 after the birth (cheap runaround to take me to the station in the mornings and occasional trips to work and Parents.)

Partner has a Grande Punto for the bigger journeys.

While my partner was pregnant we were given a Bugaboo Cameleon from some very kind neighbours,

What we have discovered is that our little girl LOVES her car seat, I mean, she'll happily sit and sleep in there all day!

We were also given this car seat, but as she loved it, we discovered that we could buy a Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix, and some adaptors that will attach this to the frame of the Bugaboo Cameleon,

This means that you then only need to think about storing and transporting the frame in the car, which can easily be done either by removing one or both of the big wheels, which is a 2 second job, or by lowering 1/2 of the rear seat!

Admittedly this is only a viable option for the first 9-12 months but for use in a 500 it may well be a life saver!

Once she's a bit older and can sit up properly and such we'll probably look to find a more 'stroller-esque' pram for the boot!

Hope that gives some food for thought too! There's hope for us 500 owners with kids yet!! haha! :)

Stephen

Further to the above post, I have got a pic of our recent trip to Tesco where we managed to get everything in the boot!

Aside from the buggy/seat, we also managed to fit in 3 coats, a pair of boots plus everything else you can see on here...pyjamas aren't mine though (or...maybe they are???!!!:chin: Haha!!:):D

It requires a bit of effort but to be honest I feel quite smug as we have had so many people banging on about how small our car is; it may be small but it'll do just fine thank you!:D
