Technical Fuel Breather Pipe

Technical Fuel Breather Pipe

I have just left a message with the garage to say that I know pipe on back order and i'm fine with that but is there something they can do to stop the smell so that I can at least have the heating on a bit because it was a bit nippy this morning with window open, no heating and it being 4 degrees!!!

I think you mean the cam cover breather hose (before anyone starts panicking about fuel leaks). You smell oil/petrol fumes because that's what's circulating around inside the crankcase.

We found this was a common issue ages ago, and keep at least 10 in stock at a time as they're used across various models in the Fiat range.

Nope, they definitely said Fuel Breather Pipe

my car is a year old this week and i am on my 2nd breather pipe and its going in for its 1st service saturday and is having another one fitted as its split again

Did they tape it up whilst waiting for the part to come in?

I'm a little worried about what my son is breathing in. Is it dangerous to have this crack - what about sparks and fuel fumes mixed together?????

If mine breaks I might just turn up at the garage with a child seat in the back.... :p

Then the person you spoke to (Service Advisor/receptionist?) is an idiot.

It's a cam cover breather hose. It allows the crankcase gases (oil/fuel vapour) to be drawn into the airbox then into the engine to be burnt-off.

Interesting, can any of the techs on here confirm if there's going to be a recall or whether it's just going to be a case of cars getting the pipe replaced as and when they fail?

That will be decided between Fiat and VOSA. At the very least it will be a Service Bulletin and vehicles delt with as the need arises. We currently check every 500 and GP when in the workshop, and we've been replacing them even with minor signs of splitting to prevent the fumes issue from occuring. ;)

Definitely a breather hose and nothing to do with fuel. Basically gasses and fumes blowing past the pistons. Always a good indicator of engine wear on an old engines. Pull the hose off, rev the engine and see how it breaths.

it says "fuel breather pipe" on the jobsheet. Whatever it is, doesn't really matter, it's being fixed as we speak!

Receptionists aren't trained in the correct language to use with customers. They may think that "fuel breather pipe" sounds easier to understand for the general public, but they forget that as soon as the word "fuel" is mentioned people panic. I've had loads of silly descriptions for items on job sheets for my car from the dealer.

Im sure if you asked the DET at the dealer they would explain exactly what D4nny8oy has.

it's fixed - no more smell. wooo hooo.

And they've booked in to have the heater fan done next Friday - when I drove there this morning it was making the noise so I left engine running as requested, technician came out, took ages I think he must have been busy bless him, and it had stopped ticking. However, I must have looked deranged enough that he believes me :) 3rd friday in a row at the garage lol

I don't really care what it's called to be honest lol. The three blokes on the desk look like they know about cars but perhaps they don't at all and more like my husband. Either way, don't want to get into a 'debate' about what the fault is called. It's fixed, I'm happy :)

well we do, key to any diagnosis is 'correct' information.

Next time you have a problem ask to speak to the DET...... its his job ;)

Slightly boring technical question alert;

How does the breather pipe splitting lead to fume smells in the cabin? Is the intake near the hose or something? I thought heaters ran off the cooling system liquid via the heater matrix?

it comes though the heater air vents if you put the air vent on recerc you get no smell the more the fan is on the more fumes come in

My car just had its service, and both the breather pipes had splits in them - they said they have plenty in stock for 500's as this is a common thing - both were replaced on the same day.

w00tsticles! A friend of mine's parents bought a Ka recently and I am writing up a post on another forum to let him know of some of the common faults on the 500 and sure enough the pipe is splitting on our 500 :p

A friend had their 2010 Ka called in last week by the dealer to have the breather pipe replaced with the new design. The dealer isn't renowned for being benevolent in these matters so the remedial work would appear to be instructed by Ford. May be worth them checking it out.

I don't get what you're trying to say? Go to Ford with a warranty claim for a Fiat?

No, your friend's parents bought a Ka did they not? The breather pipe would appear to be being replaced by Ford on Ka's, so they should check and see if their's has been replaced or is due for replacement.

Have you been driving your 500 with the windows up and inhaling the fumes?;)
