Hi guys! First post on the forum and its going to be about a problem by the look it! Just bought a fantastic second hand 08 500 1.3 multijet diesel with 15k on the clock however i've noted an issue when I start up the car especially when its not been used for 12 + hours. When I turn on the ignition the engine ticks over for a good 2 seconds before kicking into life. Although no warning lights pop up i've noted "CAN CHECK" pop up the radio.

It may just be me due to me using a petrol car before but any idea if there is a problem and what the text above means? I making the presumption it could be a Cam belt issue!

Are you starting the car as described in the manual? It has to be followed exactly otherwise you could damage the engine. The CAN CHECK warning isn't the cambelt, it's a general warning IIRC.

To clarify Lloyds comment - turn key to activate ignition and then WAIT - put on seat belt, wipe windows, affix shades etc - then turn over the engine. Can [bus] Check and/or flashing milage will show if the key is wound to start instantly. Also, being a fairly typical diesel, you need to give the glow plugs time to do their thing too.

Do you see this:

Sorry, I couldn't help myself

My Qubo does the same thing, with the same engine. Just do what pearce_jj said - turn on the ignition and wait 2 or 3 seconds before cranking the engine.

The m-jet 1.3 does seem to need a couple of seconds for the glow plugs to warm up when the engine is cold. Never had this delay with my Mazda or Vauxhall diesels, so it came as a bit of a shock to me, too.

I've never had the flashing mileage or error message, though - it just takes 2 seconds before it fires up.

Wait till the lights go out before starting. All Diesels need time for the glow plugs to work. Some are quicker, and some start operating as soon as the door remote is pressed. But Fiat's system is very good. Be patient.

I assume that when the engine is warm there is no problem?

Thanks for the replies guys. Like most of you have already said I think I am little over zealous with the ignition! The curse of driving a petrol engine I guess!
