Thanks so much for your help everyone, sod the dealer am getting what I want.

Was literally going in to buy electroclash grey one today, and then got put off when I saw three BSM cars in my road in that colour!

Order goes in on Friday (am taking a mate who knows loads about cars so dont get bambozzled this time!)

Some of the garish colours might devalue the car, for example, how many of you thought the bright orange Focus ST colour was "cool" when it first came out? i did, but now i can't stand the sight of it, maybe the same will apply with the new bright green RS, we'll see. The only time it's worth buying a distinctive colour is when it's in fashion, then after a few years people hate it, then eventually it will be worth a lot again as it will be considered "rare" (30 years down the line!)

White is a safe option if you ask me, like black, it suits most cars and comes and goes into fashion so to speak! Looks great clean too :)
 
I may be wrong, but if you're going to part exchange your car for a new one, the dealership won't mind what colour it is as long as they get the new sale.

The problem then becomes the dealer has a used car which is in a less desirable colour. So harder to get rid of.
It's not about selling cars it's about making money.

But the amount you may or may not lose after several years because of the colour is pennies a week. If you were so concerned about about money to that degree you wouldn't be getting a 500, you'd be getting a Panda or something.

I still like the Orange of the ST - but agree, its a divisive colour.

Colours like Black, Silver are pH Neutral - so while they always look good in almost all cars (bar silver in Type R Civic) - they are also uninspired.

Colours like White (real white, not Magnolia AKA BNW), Yellow, Green are divisive colours (just like Marmite, you love or hate it) ... some people just will not buy a car in that colour.

Personally, I like pH neutral cars in compact exec and above classes, but in supermini class I like to see a little bit of flair, and personality - and the right colour can add to that.

Bang on. If i've got a car thats in bosa nova white, and one in calypso orange, or punk grey (both of which I love, personally), then they will have a different value, as one is more desirable, and I have to take into account that I may end up stuck with the car for some time.

However, it ain't going to make a massive difference, probably on a two year old car a hundred quid or so.

I've seen most BSM 500s in white but also a few in black.


Go and buy it today then, just don't go too far in making it yours. :D

I don't get why people have this need to be different for the sake of it :)

If you like electroclash then get it! Don't worry about being individual or anything, just worry about what it looks like to you because that's all that matters in the end. I've got a BNW lounge which is probably the most common 500 and the only things I added, I added because I liked the look of them and that was red leather, side rubbing strip and 16" multispokes because I had the 15" ones which come with the lounge.
 
Yeah, go with what you want. A poorer resale value will be much easier to take than spending several years with a car with a niggling "I wish it was x colour" at the back of your mind.
 
You should just go for the colour you like and sod what anyone else says.

I think that in some ways the more cars of one particular colour there are, the more it devalues that colour but then again I prefer things that are unusual.

And anyway, though there definitely are fewer people who would actually choose, say, yeye green for example, the ones who like it will be chasing after fewer actual cars available, so it kind of evens out. And I think in fact a rare colour is likely to be MORE valuable in the long term.

I for one love yeye green and punk grey and would happily have had my car in either of those colours if they were still available.

I don't think that argument makes sense tbh. The good colours (BNW, pasadoble red, black etc etc) will always be more popular and will always pull people in more. Sure if you end up with a buyer who REALLY likes yuck yuck green they'll probably bite your hand off if you're selling a yuck yuck car but I can only see yuck yuck as something that turns most people off when they see it on autotrader or ebay surrounded by nice shiny BNW, Pasadoble Red and Black ones.
 
My old Alfa is in Red which was the most popular colour for them back in the 1960/70's. During the 1980's and 90's lots got resprayed in red, and it is sometimes known as "resale red" as it always sells well, other colours like Ochre nearly died out due to resprays, but in last 5 years they have comeback, and some cars are now getting there 2nd or 3rd respray in the original "groovy" 60s colours with many people prefering them as they look period. Not seen too many hearing aide beige Marina's recently though.:cool:

I see what you mean there - but picking an extremely unpopular colour like yuck yuck green ... and hoping for an unlikely event that everyone with yuck yuck green spray painting it black/red/bnw - and then even more unlikely event, that people are suddenly going to want yuck yuck green again!

I don't see it happening ...

It's a bit of a pity really. I like the 105 in red of course but it's a cliche and there are so many other REALLY nice colours for it :(
 
My Alfa has always been red (as confirmed with the factory and a recent bare metal respray) and from memory red was one of the most popular colours in the 60's and 70's before we all started wanting silver in the 80's my dad had 3 red cars in a row, a cortina mk1, viva mk1 and Cortina mk3, a green mini van before it (best colour for them) and a metallic bown Chrysler 2 litre after. (then came a succession of silvers with only a blue and a white car to brake that up.)
 
When I was trying to part-exchange my BMW 3 series (immaculate with 19k & FSH), several dealers weren't even interested in purchasing it, as it was Bright Red. I was told if it was Black or Silver, they wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

It would never stop me from buying the colour that I really wanted though - life's too short :)

There are rules are have to follow

1. Black/Silver - good in all cars
2. White - divisive, good for medium performance cars, Type R, Golf GTI etc
3. Wild Colours - Yellow, Green - mainly good for Supercars
4. Red - Good for small cars - up to super mini class, then a no-no right the way up to Supercars where it is permitted again
6. Universally bad colours - Yuck Yuck Green, there is no car that this can be justified for


If you follow the above rules, all well be good in the world (y)
