Hi,
I am looking for some technical information as to why my car managed to drive away from me when i left it in first gear (and forgot), leaned in to start my engine whilst i de-iced, not only did it jerk forward like past cars have done and stalled, but my 500 didnt stall it carried on driving, leaving me watching it drive accross the street towards my neighbours drive!!
I know it is a silly thing for me to do and I am paying for it now with a few suspected broken toes and a scratch on my car door.
But i was just wondering how my car manged to actually do this??

you answered your own question

i thort i might not get any serious response!! I know it was in gear, handbrake was half on. had a car full off stuff and couldnt get it on fully so left it in gear to be on the safe side, which i never normally do which is why it all happened, just spoken to a few people and they agreed with me that it should stall.

Oh and no, noone saw me thank god, and the scratch its minimal and my toes are minging!!

*sigh*

When will people learn? :bang:

I mean FFS before I even get to the purely mechanical reasons for just deicing your car there are a couple of good reasons above why you should NOT run your engine whilst you're not in the car.

You are only causing premature wear to your engine by running it whilst you're deicing the screen anyway.

Why would you leave it in gear whilst you start just to be safe? That's an incredibly silly thing to do especially whilst you only had your handbrake half on

Be sensible next time and don't do this again. Imagine if it had kept on going and ran over a person? (n)

OK Maxi, we get the point now, I think the poster wanted an explanation more than anything.

I'm guessing the anti stall kicked in or something. I can drive my car into the garage without my feet on the pedals because of it! It shouldn't cut in that early though, surely? I still have to lift the clutch fairly slowly to get it to cut in on mine!

But Lloyd, sometimes you need to point out the immediate danger that someone's actions have posed to themselves and others......

No it shouldn't.
If the car was easy to stall then you get 100 times the amount of people complaing the car stalls too easily.
BSM would have been less likely to place the massive order if they thought the car was difficult to drive.

A car that is difficult to stall is easier to drive and something you want.
Do you really want a car that is easy to stall if you have the choice?

I don't think it's anti stall per say, just the ECU responds to a decrease in idle speed (caused by the load, ie the car) by "opening the throttle" a smidge, which then lets the car drive away. Same reason coasting with the clutch in actually uses more fuel than being on the over run.

What a fantastic car. You reach in and start it, having left it in gear and not depressed the clutch, or much bothered with the handbrake, and the brave little thing starts up and keeps going for you.

Well done Fiat. Strong little car (y)

That is NOT the way to start a car by the way. I'm glad BSM has lots of them to instruct learners in: I hope it works.

Fair enough the original poster did something wrong and dangerous and I think he/she is fully aware of that by the fact that they have broken toes and a damaged car.

There is no need for any more sarcasm or **** taking, the OP wanted to know why this happened, they didn't want a personality critique.

Well I don't see what's to understand. He started his car in gear without being in it and it went for a drive. Why would it not happen. If it's cold then initially it'll be revving higher anyway which makes the the whole thing more likely.
I've seen my neighbour do this and it was hilarious, except that his car almost hit mine

Do you really believe he didn't know why it happened?
I mean, really!

What sort of response other than shock/horror could there possibly be?

I'm sure we are all sorry he hurt himself, but the title inferred that the car drove away from him, like it was an animate object with a will of its own. It is a lump of metal and plastic that does nothing until a human turns a key - so the replies were directed at the human.

We've all done stupid things, and we've all been told so. This is no different. Someone might have been seriously hurt.
Learning curve...
