Anyone yet tried to tune power with a chip? I think the 1.4 could do with sharpening up, so I'm thinking about the possibility...............

I have seen one offer, for a 9bhp increase in power, costing about £230, but I am unclear on the likely effect on fuel consumption, which I don't think is great even now, as a standard car. (we struggle to hit 40mpg, per on board computer read out, despite fairly 'careful' driving)

Any comments?

Just get it mapped ^

you need to improve the breathing before worrying about mapping

exhaust manicat is very restrictive so that's the first thing to bin - get a Supersprint manifold and system

the next thing to do is improve the intake - BMC do an excellent induction kit

then if you still need more get it mapped - with uprated cams 120bhp is achievable

was a guy used to come on here (until the uninformed chased him off) who has supercharged his 1.2, gearbox wasn't up to it though, so got the internals replaced with those from an Arbarth, 1.4 has different gearbox though.

Curious, was it the gears that weren't up to it or the diff that went kaboom?

I'm sorry but if you come on here and just say "I've got 120bhp out of my 1.2" and then refuse to answer any questions when people ask then people are going to start getting a bit annoyed.

can we please try to keep this thread on topic about tuning the 1.4

please (y)
You mean the 1.368 :p

If I was wanting to make my car go faster I'd wait till Abarth's start getting crashed and get the engine and box out of one, sure it'll take a few years for them to become common but you'll get a better increase in HP! :) Just my 2p

My supersharging questions are semi-serious. I've heard people talk of the gearboxes not coping but I've also heard other people say it's not the actual gearboxes that fail but rather the diffs that give up the fight after a certain lb/ft rating.

If it's the gears, fair enough. But if it's the diff then I'm ok with the Qauife and I'd be interested in the supercharging route. Mmmm Abarth eater.

Does anyone have any actual evidence or first hand experience of too much oomph being pushed through the standard gearbox and it blowing up? I'd be interested in speaking to anyone that's had this happen to them. I wonder what torque/HP rating it gives up at? And what sort of investigation happened post-blow up to see where it gave out?

I don't think anyone does a different gearset for the 6 speed in the 500. Nigel who organised the diff group buy asked Quaife what they'd charge to make him a set of straight cut gears for the 6 speed casing and I think the quote came in at £6k.

A recurring fantasy of mine. Any t-jet would do really. But finding one from a wreck is a nightmare. They don't come up often and when they do they're pricey. Fiat will sell you one new for about £3000 if I'm not mistaken.

Mods, I'm genuinely curious about supercharging. Is there a reason we can't discuss this that I'm not aware of? Happy to start another thread and outline the parameters of the discussion there. As indicated in my previous post in this thread I'd be very interested in a technical discussion based on facts and actual first hand experience of supercharging.

Is this reasonable?

Well it takes a while for these things to get cheaper I guess.

A Subaru example is the 2l turbo engines are on ebay for about a grand and the newer 2.5 engines are more like 2-3 grand. A few years and t-jet engines will be a lot cheaper I'm sure.

theres nothing wrong with discussing superchargers. rob has a bad habit of only telling the part of the story he wants people to hear. ;)

Seems entirely reasonable to me - anybody like to disagree?
