Tuning 1.4litre : Chip tune?

Tuning 1.4litre : Chip tune?

Thanks for response - best I've seen talks of 9bhp benefit (http://www.evolutionchips.co.uk/chipsearch.asp) which is not bad, tho I'm uncertain as to impact on fuel economy - if any - in 'normal' driving.

That increase in bhp is possibly worthwhile, tho I'd like to hear from anyone who has actually installed it, to get a feel for the difference that it makes, in the real world.

Anyone yet tried to tune power with a chip? I think the 1.4 could do with sharpening up, so I'm thinking about the possibility...............

I have seen one offer, for a 9bhp increase in power, costing about £230, but I am unclear on the likely effect on fuel consumption, which I don't think is great even now, as a standard car. (we struggle to hit 40mpg, per on board computer read out, despite fairly 'careful' driving)

Any comments?

Since no one have replied to your last post I've looked at the claimed figures on the URL and there are a few anolomies in the performance figures...

1.2 60bhp 8bhp - this is an error - it has 69bhp standard
TA 95bhp 5bhp - conservative
A500 135 20bhp - typical standard increase with a TMC would expect 160
A500SS 160 15bhp - doubt this
1.4 100bhp 9bhp

Returning to your original post - why would you consider a 'Chip tune' if you concerned about the effect on fuel consumption ?
If you want sharpening up you can just press the 'Sport' button.

I was interested in a chip tune, but i was concerned about the warranty. Also i've heard it can be reset by the dealer during a service.

Im just gonna wait until i trade the car in (3 years or so) and buy an Abarth.

With my limited understanding of 'chipping' there are 2 parts to the set-up. The computer and ECU. ECU contains the mapping whilst the computer holds other information e.g. the cars mileage etc. If your ECU is re-mapped -I can't see the dealer overwriting it.
On a MX5 that I had it was developed for lower octane fuel so I was able to advance the ignition to 14deg coupled with a Jackson CAI.
On a RS Escort CVH I upgraded to a BBR phase I chip that allowed the boost to be increased but it had fuelling problems when it was 'left' on boost. A Saab dealership with a racing heritage (had a knowledge of Cossies) mechanically increased the fuel which dropped the average mpg to 22 . So I ended up upgrading to a new BBR chip phase II which 'sort of' solved the problem.
At the moment there is a demand for individuals getting their ECUs re-mapped to reduce their performance for better economy with a switch been used. The Americans have 'talked' about using the Sport button which is linked to a different mapping but nothing has been 'released' (they have a different ECU). It's unlikely that anything similar will be done to the Euro 1.4. IMO the future of the 1.4 is questionable (Lancia Ypsilon plans to drop this engine choice)
The ECU on the 500 is quite clever and if something changes it can re-adjust within certain parameters - it's more or less the same ECU in the 100HP except it can be mapped.
If I had £300 to spare I might be tempted with Nuova's offering (provided my car wasn't on PCP) where at least the Panel filter is changed. Hopefully someone will 'spend the money' and give us feedback.:)

The issue i have is my car is on the hire purchase plan. So when its 3 years old i can either pay the large final payment (by then ill have this without a problem) or part ex it and buy another.

So any modifications must be removed if i choose to part ex it.

Im currently waiting to hear about a new post at work which will mean i can afford an Abarth Esseesse if i part ex mine when the 3 years are up. I love the 500. Even though the dash rattle drive me mad, but hopefully thats getting fixed tomorrow.
