Hi,
I own a '08 500 Lounge, recentley I noticed the gaiter was loose at the bottom.
Turns out the PVC has stiffend (frozen??? was -15c), anyway going into 4'th has pulled the gaiter out. Close inspection shows it beeing secured by a plastic ring at the base, this again locks into the car, two of the plastic clips are broken, and the whole ring feels broken. Does anyone have any tips on fixing this? Is it possible to get a replacement?

You need to tell people what you're talking about or take pictures.

Sorry about that, broken english and broken gaiter..

See picture below, i'm referring to the pvc/ fake leather gear leaver cover thingy. I've seen aftermarket leather ones advertised, but I'm not shure they include the broken plastic ring at the base.

No problems :) I suspected that was what you were talking about but it's always best to give as much information as possible. Personally I'd take it in and get it repaired under warranty.

Thanks guys. So you actually think this would be covered under warranty and not considered wear and tear?

Not really off topic but a slight segue, I noticed a while back that if I left my car in 1st gear all the time when parked, a definite sharp pointed crease began to form in the gaiter, which stayed when the gear lever was moved... after not very long I could envisage this causing wear and eventually a hole. I stopped leaving it in 1st all the time and now the crease has smoothed out again. Just a heads up from an anally retentive friend! :D

Hi - My '09 Lounge has just suffered exactly the same problem, it happened when the car was put into reverse. It looks as though the cut of the gaiter is a bit tight and when the reverse collar is lifted and reverse engaged it pulls the chromed plastic ring away, breaking the clips. Its going back to the dealers for washer jets and this next week!

I have some problem with the broken plastic gaitor clip. Just out of warranty. Clip not available on its own. Have to buy whole gaitor for £65+VAT.

Anybody know where i can get just the clips. Thanks. [email protected]

Hiya,
Did you have any luck sourcing the plastic ring? I have the same problem with mine and I'm not prepared to pay the ridiculous price to replace the complete assembly.
Thanks,
Teresa

sorry does not exist . bought a complete leather gaitor with ring on e bay

I have also had exactly the same problem with the gear stick gaiter coming away from the mounting. It's really annoying as clearly the flimsy plastic ring that secures the gear stick gaiter into place has a habit of snapping and it looks like you can't buy a direct replacement.

So, may I ask two questions?

1) Lots of ebay sellers sell new gaiters in various colours - but I haven't found one that sells the plastic inset ring as well - does anyone have a link?

2) How much of a hassle is it to fit a new one (i.e. gaiter + ring)?

Any help really appreciated.

Hi

I replaced my gaiter in my Abarth with a new one from an Italian company called BLACK - awesome quality !!!!

Now the install was a right royal PITA !!!! Including snapping one the plastic clips in the retaining ring. Fortunately it was a minor clip and it did not present a problem

However as BLACK must get this issue all the time they now sell new retaining rings ........see

Hope this helps

I think they only sell the black colour for people that don't want the chrome.

All the small details add up.
Your gearknob is not on straight, again a small detail but it would do my head in.
