General Fiat 500's being stolen in the Sheffield area

thread now cleaned, please note that it makes a friendlier forum if people report and wait for staff to sort problem posts, replying to them doesn't help at all.

If fiat fitted trackers as standard it could put the price of a car up by £1k an option many wont want to pay for. it would be better if the people that wanted them fitted them them selves

fabulous!!! I was amazed this thread could have reached 2 pages without someone sharing the benefit of their opinions!! thanks Dave :worship:

this comes and goes in phases, geography, the availabilty and desireability of the car all play in. A couple of years ago there were crews working the north circular corridor, lofting c and e class mercs, mk3 & 4 golfs, upper end models being the prime targets. Did vw and mercedes come to the aid of the owners by fitting an anti hiab theft device? No, it's horrible to have your property nicked, i know, but when it's all said and done, any measures you take are merely a delaying tactic, a determined thief WILL try, and probably succeed. Of course if there was no market for bargain secondhand parts, or cheap ie owners looking for bits on an unreasonable budget, there would be no supply. Just a thought.

They are only desirable in that they are in short supply and demand is high.

If a market exists for stolen 500s then some thieving scumbags will try to meet that need.

These cars are being stolen from the affluent SW of the City where there are plenty of 500s knocking about.

to turn your comment on its head- its BECAUSE they are desirable that they are in short supply and demand is high...

as to why they are desirable thats a whole other thread, but these thieving scumbags need to jog on.

It would be interesting to see where these cars eventually turn up. My guess is that they're simply broken for parts, given the hassles involved in getting immobilisers, keys etc sorted - although this would only be for accident damaged cars, given that all 500 should be in warranty. There can't be that many accident damaged cars though, can there?
I suppose the final possibility is that they're being used to clone other cars - but again, they'd need the keys for this. I don't want to worry you too much, but is there a chance that the thief could have your home address from some document etc inside the car?

Mrs G thinks they are desirable thats why she bought one.

Any desirable product has a market for thieves

Might be worth a call to Fiat UK from the OP & the other person who's had their 2 500s stolen in Sheffield. See if Fiat can't put some sort of info on their dealer database/systems to block keys being issued to vehicles with certain chassis numbers unless particular checks have been carried out first.

Possibly abit of a stab in the dark, but you never know - sometimes Fiat respond really proactively in such situations.

Good luck with it all.

thanks +1 for asking your mum and brother.

no, we didn't have any personal info in the car, so hopefully they can't do anything too dodgey. well so far they have got hold of 2 blue, 1 green and a white fiat 500 that we know of.....would have thought more white would be on the list if they just wanted parts as there are more about, but i guess not everyone reads/checks forums....i didn't before this....

so frustrating!

I thought of this topic today, so when i parked up, i removed the key from ignition, and hid it in the car! (don't tell anyone though)
You walking to work tomorrow? If anyone sees a BNW 500 with 16" multispokes around your way tomorrow they're lying!!!

They'll either just get a slap on the wrists and a fine or they'll have a prison sentence that means they're released within a few months to do it again.

That's if they're convicted, there will probably be a 'lack of evidence' or something to get them off the hook.
