General Front Window Heater

General Front Window Heater

Maybe its just one of those days but I'm really confused...
In summary.

Scrape your windows, hop in your car, turn the air con on, it might not work if it's too cold but it won't cause any damage, drive away straight away without letting it warm up though don't give it too much throttle, if you've got a turbo car don't get on boost till the oil is up to temp (but no on would do that anyway) and once the engine is up to temp you can turn the heater on and turn the air con off.

As is this comment about climate, since it won't blow any meaningly volume of air (on auto) until the engine has warmed somewhat :bang:

But it really doesn't take long when you hit the demist button before it does it's stuff. So not a problem really.

I can't see what the fuss is about really. I just start the engine hit the demist button then scrape the ice off.

I used to have a Puma and that had a 'Quikclear' front windscreen and that used to clear just like the back in about 2 minutes i really miss that feature (i believe it was a Ford thing) im just off to work now so im going to try the A/C trick see if that works any quicker as i have noticed it is pretty slow clearing my windscreen and warming the car up!

I use the "garage" method of keeping my car frost free but previously I just used to put a large section of cardboard under the wipers when it was left out overnight.

How far did you get in the morning before realising that you hadnt taken the cardboard off and couldnt see anything out the screen? LOL

I read somewhere a while back that Ford's right to exclusive use of the electric quick-clear screen is coming to an end, so other manufacturers will be able to fit it to their cars.

exactly what i did yesterday after a little de icing before i got in!-

pressing the air con button, clearly makes a difference to demisting speed, and driving off gets engine to temp quicker....

alas its really mild again this morning, so that was my practise for cold snaps!

That depends on the engine, in the little diesel it takes a good few miles before the water hits the required 35*C.

Anyway I don't disagree with you on the start-then-scrape thing, that was exactly my point in the first place. The engine will take any additional wear as a result certainly during warantee period and almost certainly for its design life of (say) 10 years.

Yes our Puma, KA and Cmax all did that, really miss it. I think Notts you are right and the exclusivity thingy is coming to an end ... mind you I think I was told that about 18 months ago and it still isn't appearing on other models of cars.

I seem to remember many years ago you could get a tin foil like self adhesive demister you could add to your back window... maybe they should start making these again you could put one on your windscreen then! Result!

I think Smiths made them and they were pretty ****. You could also look around for an external metal sunvisor to complete the look.
