General How Long To Receive V5 Document?

How long should it take to receive the V5 registration document? as i have had mine a month now and not received it.

I work for the DVLA and you should receive your V5 within 4-6 weeks of the DVLA receiving the notification. However this will vary depending on if you buy a new car or a used one.

FOr a new car, you should receive the V54 within 2-3 weeks maximum. If not then complete a V62 and send it to the DVLA via your local office or post it directly to Swansea. If the vehicle record shows you to be the keeper and the original was sent within the past 2 months you will not be required to pay for the new V5

For a used car, it will all depend on if you hold the V5C2 (green new keeper supliment) - if you do then as above you should get the V5 within 3 weeks (usually) so if not apply with the V62 and use this with the V5C2 and there will be no charge if you apply within 2 months of the original print date.

If you have a used car and no green slip then it will all depend on whose name is on the record. If it is not yours then the DVLA is obliged to contact the current keeper to confirm they have disposed of the vehicle. If they do not respond after 28 days the new v5 is issued to you.

If there is a private number plate involved then the amount of time the V5 takes will vary. If you are putting a plate on the vehicle via a certificate this should only take 2-3 weeks. If the plate is on another car or your retaining the plate on your existing vehicle then this can take up to 6 weeks from the date of process.

I hope that helps. I got my new V5 within 3 days of collecting my car!

I guess, like in every walk of life, there are some who want to help and others who go through the motions! Thankfully I am not based in Swansea and work in the call centre!!

It is expected that customers wait up to 6 weeks for a V5 but when you buy a new car it should only take a few days usually (unless number plate transfers are involved) and without trying to shift blame but we always send the documents out but sometimes they dont arrive - I guess there is a lot sat in post sorting centres somewhere.

Glad you got it sorted though, with or without the help from the DVLA!

Thanks for your comments i realise these things do happen i'm just worried that there is a copy of my v5 out there with all my details and my cars details. I don't know what to wish for either Royal Mail is incompetent or crooked.
