Per the Parkers example I quoted earlier,

Panda - £8,600, 65% residual after a year, £3,010 cost.
500 - £10,700, 78% residual after a year, £2,354 cost.

Cost of additional capital (£10,700 - £8,600) @ 5% £105.

500 works out, in that example, £550 cheaper and lets face it, which would you rather have (y)

I like it when the number prove what you want them to, and even if they hadnt you still have bought the 500 !

Your figures are a bit wrong there :)

Panda is £605 to purchase up front that you've said it is :)

Yes but if you look at lloyds tsb to 1.2 eco panda is £1600 discount and the 500 is none so If I get a panda with 500 extra Ie 3 seats in rear climate and front fogs it still only £7500 new or £6000 for active eco

Having just had a look at the similar sized cars on offer as part of an exercise to get my mum a new car I have to say that there isn't much that compares. The Clio is not a comparison with the 500, the Twingo is. And the Twingo has to be one of the most awful cars I've been in during the whole time I've been test driving cars before buying. It was plastic and utilitarian. The Mito is nice, but IMO the servicing costs are high. The IQ is ridiculously small in the back. And the Ford KA, well it's a Ford KA ... used to be a more modern style when it was first brought out but now it just looks like the fiesta and the focus - boring. I would buy a Panda but only the top specced one, and it does look very dated compared with the shape of the 500, IQ and Mito.

My opinion by the way before everyone starts jumping down my throat!

would it suprise you to learn that the Ka is in fact based on the 500 and built in the same factory?

I think what he means though is that when the Clio can be had for the same price then it does kind of come into the equation. I must admit if we had a child or two I might have been tempted by something bigger but if that comes along with the 500 we'll just make do.

Don`t forget there is a new VW Polo just come out.

True, that is a quality car but where the sex appeal? Same goes for the Yaris.
I'm all with Heidi, particulary on the fact that the Panda looks old (5 year old design going on 15) and considering the 500's design is ageless (or at least will grow old gracefully) if anyone considers a car for the next 5 to 8 years then the 500 really stands out!

Look at any well specced 2001 Mini Cooper in the street, don't they still look good, even compared to a brand new Polo? That should be our 500's in 8 years time imo.

if you order a new car now you stand next to no chance of getting it before VAT goes up.
Isn't it too late anyway?
I signed for my 500 in mid october and was told that the price agreed on that day will be reevaluated at reception of the car (jan/feb?) because of that VAT rise. Am I taken for a ride or is it right?

Buy a Panda, its a boring square box without any style !!

500 wins hand down ! or should I say thumbs up !
Yes but some people aren't fussed with fashion and looking 'cool'. I suspect most people would happily have a few extra thousand in their back pocket rather than driving a car which is less practical and a bit better looking.

I am not fussed with fashion or looking cool and I would be happy with a couple of grand in my pocket - what I am bothered about is owning things I like and my 500 makes me smile :Deverytime I see it and I think how lucky I am to have the car I really want! (y)

but as always there will be people who just want something cheap and cheerful which is reliable and will get them from A to B whilst also being practical as well and for this the Panda is better than the 500.

i have driven Fiats for 10 years plus and in that time Fiats have ranged from being objects of ridicule to sub zero cool so the current perception is a bonus

would be just as happy driving a base model Panda to be honest (y)

Nothing is worse than driving around in the worlds most reliable car (my '79 131 Mirafiori) in Australia where people have absofrickinlutely no respect for the Fiat name. People would laugh at me even though my car had only broken down ONCE in 20 years! For ANY 70's car that's fantastic.

Any man thinking that buying a 500 will get them sex off ladies is going to be sadly dissapointed! Men maybe, but not ladies.
Thats just the "ego" taking  does it matter what you drive as long as it over 50 mpg under group 5 ins and £35 or less to tax

Therefore unless your desperate for a new car you could wait and see what happens to prices after scrappage runs out. I think car makers might struggle for a while, and maybe some deals about again, as I think non scrappage customers are funding scrappers discount to an extent.

A fiesta 1.25 Zetec is about £10,500 on dealdrivers, similar price to a lounge, far more accomplished car overall, buts its not a 500.
The 1.25 (New) Fiesta is heavier than the 500, it was something I was considering but by the time we'd gone up to a 1.4 and had similar extras it was over £2k more. But then the KA is the equivilent size to the 500 so can't really be compared like for like.
Also if your planning on keeping the car for a good while (like I am) the retro cars stay looking current for longer, where as the Fiesta is on its 3rd model in 13 years.
My last car was a Fiesta and I loved it but I'm made up with my 500 so far.
