Well the A500 is in having its tailgate replaced, along with the handbrake and dashboard problem. The handbrake keeps on rising and making the warning light appear/beep. The dashboard that was resprayed the correct colour has scratches under the paintwork

I cheekily asked if I could have a GPA as a courtesy car, they went one better and gave me this...

The Esseesse and fook me its quick!!

Class courtesy car, almost as good as the C1 diesel ive got whilst my sedici is in ;) and the wife only got a 207 sport with the dash light up like a christmas tree with warning lights when the 500 went in ;) note to self must take the fiats to a dealer that does abarths for all warranty work!!

I had to pester a bit to get an Abarth, but if you don't ask you don't get ;) A full week with 180bhp

I had to pester to get ANY courtesy car!! think the threat of a new car shapped entrance to the showroom worked in the end ;)

Punto 180bhp and free sounds good, but it may come back needing a new set of tyres if I had it ;) as the saying goes courtesy cars fastest in cars in the world!!

Hows it compare to the A500? Used to have a GPS and really like the abarth version and i suspect will be rarer than the 500

For me quick as in (fook me that's quick) cars start at about 150bhp/tonne. I'd quite like a 500 Abarth but then I think to myself is it really all that quick in real terms and sadly I just don't think it'd do it for me.

So you won't get a 500 Abarth because it isn't quick enough? But you have a 500 Sport, which I'd imagine, must be quick enough for you or you wouldn't have it!

No, we have a 1.2 Lounge because it's cheap to run, reliable and nice inside and we also have a Subaru Legacy Turbo because it's more comfortable, better to drive distances in, bigger inside, got a bigger boot, quick (0-60 in 6.5), it's AWD so a bit of snow isn't an issue and various other reasons. If I was going to buy a quick car though I'd want it to be very quick and not just reasonably quick.

The Esseesse feels a lot more refined. Seats and driving position are perfect. I'm growing to like it A LOT! It is very quick and when in 5th & 6th it still pulls.

The A500 is a quick car, I think getting 180bhp out of that would be well and truly MENTAL! But, if I was buying again and had £18k I'd buy the GPA SS without a doubt :worship:

The A500 is a quick car

If you think the 500 is a quick car, next time you're in North Wales we'll have a drag race :p Subaru has 200 horsies and does 0-60 a whole second and a half quicker than the 500 plus with being awd it can put the power down too. The 500 is a warm hatch especially in non-ss form.

Yeah but which would you rather own... A boxy old Subaru or a new 500 Abarth!

For a small, light car it is quick, definitely no slow coach. I think many people on the road have thought the same and they've soon been proven wrong ;) Against a Subaru it would have no chance in hell, the GPA SS on the other hand might give it a run for its money

Both? The 500 we have does the whole economical thing, the looking nice thing and also the being nice inside thing and the Subaru does the whole being quick and being an all-weather car. Chalk and cheese as some would say. For the price of an Abarth we have two cars which are the best of both worlds rather than being a compromise.

I think the A500 is quicker than people think. On paper the 0-60 time is 7.9 and the BHP is 135, but as you well know, that was probably tested in scientific conditions on a new car. A few owners have reported figures of 140 to 161 BHP standard, which you can believe if you want to. I've personally timed 0-60 several times with an accurate stopwatch (and a mate who didn't believe the 0-60 time) and it ranges between 6.8 and 7.4, i would say an average of 7.2 from a non SS A500. OK so it's not that quick, but it's nippy up to 100 and last week i raced an Aston Martin DB9 in the wet, and over the 9 mile journey i lost him 2 or 3 times (i was in front!) He passed me when i turned off later on and gave a flash of lights and a power surge of throttle!

I've also had a 350Z follow me out of a junction and copy me when i floored it, however he constantly stayed at least 3 car lengths behind me and didn't catch up.

I think the type of roads you drive makes a huge difference, I've never driven the A500 on a motorway for example, 95% of my driving is tight twisty narrow roads over the hills and far away where the A500 is best suited. But the GPA is probably a lot better on bigger roads over long distances etc. So i haven't really come to a conclusion have i

The Abarth 500 is a completely different appeal to what you've described though.

Don't you think most Abarth owners realise that they could get both a second hand Impreza and a Fiat 500 for the money they've spent?

I should, one of my close friends owns a 56 plate Subaru Impreza WRX STI Spec D and it's scarily fast! He loves it to bits and it leaves my little 500 in the dust, but it isn't all about going super fast in one car and looking pretty and being economical in another.

Finally, the Abarth 500 IS fast, just because faster cars exist it doesn't make it slow.

Listen, you were the one who brought it up. You were the one who said "If the 500 you've got is quick enough then why not an Abarth" (I paraphrase of course) and I am merely justifying my opinion and my purchase and why an Abarth would be a bit of a waste when we've already got something with more go and we wanted something which was cheapish to buy and even cheaper to run.

Of course it's nippy and I never suggested otherwise :)

As for the racing an Aston.... LOL :) People always seem to think that the other person is racing them. Sometimes people don't care at all, sometimes they're not in the mood and some people just aren't confident in the corners and just like to give it a blat on the straights.

As for the Nissan, if he was less than 3 car lengths behind you at speed then he'd have been tailgating, perhaps he's just a sensible drive who likes to put his foot down but doesn't want a race or anything

Fair enough, not saying you're silly for not getting an Abarth or anything, and the Impreza is a fantastic machine and lots (and lots) of fun. Just saying, you can't really call the Abarth slow, just think it's because you're used to something faster.

You're right, I can't call the 500 Abarth slow and I DIDN'T.

Anyway I'm not a huge fan of Impreza's anyway, too showy and a bit chavvy IMHO unless it's one of the special editions like the RB5, P1 and McRae edition.

I don't think the Subaru referred to here in this thread is a 56 plater more 1956.
