Well, if you choose a petrol engine from the By Diesel range, you get the best of both world! :D

(Getting his coat...... "taxi")

£1500 is a lot of money, my vote is for the 1.2 unless you're really in need of the extra oomph of the turbo diesel.

Well of course it will be better. But I think what you mean is "will it hold its value better" and the answer to that is that nobody knows.
Sorry thats what I meen lol I have seen a lot off new pre reg lounge and sports for about £10000 with 15 miles on clock 58/09 plates

I'd say the best thing you can do is weigh up your options by considering your driving conditions and how many miles a year you're putting in. There's a lot of posts on this forum describing mpg/driving conditions/driving style so you'll be able to draw a conclusion from that.

As an example, I'm in a 1.3 diesel spending 90% of my time on motorways and driving it like I stole it, getting ~57mpg and putting in ~16,000 miles a year.

Seeing as diesel and petrol are pretty much the same price these days (although who can predict how it'll fluctuate), how long will it take you to make your £1500 back? If the answer is you can't, consider throwing that £1500 at options and make your 1.2 a happier place to be :D

At the moment the wife drive the tjet more them me I have a er650n motorbike.I we do about 8/10k a year and best to have a car thats 35 to tax a year and need a car thats the best M.P.G Because I dont belive in giveing the oil companys "sHELL" or any more

Well obviously the diesel does better MPG. The big question though is whether you'll be better off giving more money to Shell rather than giving it to Fiat.

This was a significant factor in my buying decision, since I had planned to keep the car 5 years and oil was $150 a barrell at the time.

Long term oil is still forcast to go up - a lot. The extreme mpg of the 1.3 does offer some insulation from that eventuality.

This is the EXACT reason I went for the 1.2! :p

I would pick the 1.3 over the 1.2 just for the joy of the torque.

No point asking on here tho you will ALWAYS get mixed opinions, bets to test drive them both on a route your most likely to take every day and see for your self. I did this and the 1.2 was, well putting it lightly sh*t.

surely that's why he asked to hear both sides...

diesel has some -ves too:

smelly sticky fuel
DPF regen issues
higher costs
sounds 'orrible

smelly sticky fuel = I have always used the gloves when filling diesel or petrol
PPF regen issues = I have one about every 3 weeks if that
higher costs = For the car in the first place? Ok ill give you that.
sounds 'orrible = On tickover yes kinda, but on the move not so
