I've decided to go for the 1.3 MJ Diesel as i will be driving around 50 miles per day.

Just interested in what sort of range i should be expecting from a full tank?

I'm currently driving a mini cooper s which gets about 260 from a £45 full tank!!

Have a look on www.fuelly.com and see if you can find a diesel owner who runs their car low to see what sort of range the car will do. :)

I've got a petrol 1.2 but I don't think the tanks are any different and yesterday I got 412 miles out of a tank of 41.6 litres (the tank is officially 35 litres) so I don't think it should be a problem to get 500 miles out of a diesel if you fill it to the brim. I'm sure I probably still had a couple of litres left in the tank but didn't want to risk it as I was going into an area where there was no mobile coverage.

When the display goes blank you've still got 30 miles to go plus possibly a bit extra but to be safe I'd fill up within 30 miles.

So on the 1.2, what do you reckon is a normal mpg with a mix of A roads and some lanes? (I live in the Westcountry !)

Well there are a multitude of factors. On a long distance run over a mixture of roads I can easily get mid 50's but our 500 tends to get driven on a lot of short journeys like for instance the one I did today which was about 1.5 miles there and 1.5 miles back about an hour and a half later when the car was entirely cold. That murders economy.

Thanks 306maxi, glad I am not paying the petrol cost of the Arbarth ! - but sure must be fum to drive !
(did drive my mums 595 a couple of decades ago, but wasn't very reliable, so she bought a golf !)

At £1.029 a litre I put in £27 worth of Shell Diesel and the 000 range indicator comes on after having done roughly 365 miles.

My driving is a mixture of 70/30 motorway/urban commute. On the motorway I rarely go above 60mph. Care has done just over 12500 miles from January and is running on 15" alloys.

You could get a whole lot more fuel in your car and you could also do 30 miles when the range goes to 0.

How many clicks should you be getting at the pump before the fuel starts to overflow, any idea?

Fill it till it clicks the first time then pull the nozzle out and fill it slowly till you see the diesel at the top of the filler no longer going down. Just do it slowly the first time and you'll get the hang of :)

I get about 340 on 28 litres. My car is on fuelly, I think my average is about 54 mpg. That is without giving any regard to my driving style, plus about 150 miles of that is my commute to work which consists of a lot of city driving. My car has only down about 3500 miles though, so I expect it to loosen up and get better over time.

Sounds about the same as mine. I'm going to brim it on the next fillup and see how close to 400 miles I can get.

As Trev said you'll absolutely cream 400 miles with a diseasel. The problem with the 500 seems to be that it doesn't allow you to get a huge amount of fuel in easily. If you run it till it says it's empty and fill it till it clicks a couple of times you'll get 35 litres in but most people don't run it till it's empty so that means that a lot of people are only getting 20 something litres of fuel in and even with a diesel that's not going to get you as far as someone like myself who runs their car almost dry and then brims it. For me the whole point of a diesel with my 406 was the silly range it had with its 70 litre tank. The most I ever got in was 72 litres and I did about 640 miles which is fantastic in terms of range. If I'd only gone to work and back each day when I had that car I was only filling up once every 3 weeks :)

Diesels are meant to be long range cruisers and you can easily get 500 out of an MJ if you brim it and run it low.
