General 1.3 MJ - Whats your best Fuel Range?

I get about 340 on 28 litres. My car is on fuelly, I think my average is about 54 mpg. That is without giving any regard to my driving style, plus about 150 miles of that is my commute to work which consists of a lot of city driving. My car has only down about 3500 miles though, so I expect it to loosen up and get better over time.

Here's Bob's stats for you Amy - http://www.fuelly.com/driver/amyh22/500

He's doing well

Added myself to fuelly, only six of us on there! (username is J1mbo)

I'd check again, there's 13 (but only 6 have the minimum 3 fill ups recorded)

If you can add 2 more fill ups at thre same level of MPG you will have the best mpg of all the fiats recorded - Puntovan has the record with 60.5, and that's a diesel.

Yup... 30.4 litres, would be 560 on 35 litres or 640 on that 40 litre fill you managed
Blimey! You going to try brimming it?

I know people stress about expansion and their tanks overflowing so I've been looking online to find out the coefficient of expansion for diesel and petrol.

The figures are as follows

.00095/C° (petrol) .095%!!!!
.00082/C° (diesel) .082%!!!!

So if you have 40l of diesel in your tank and the temperature rises 20 degrees the expansion will be 661ml and considering that this is unlikely to ever happen but lets use it as a worst case scenario ;) You'd only have to drive 8 miles if you're doing 60mpg to cancel out this expansion. Petrol expands faster so you get 766ml which is 9 miles at 53mpg.

Now at this time of year the temperature doesn't even get above 20 degrees and I doubt the petrol/diesel is going in @ 0 degrees so this is very much the worst case scenario.

No excuses now! I expect everyone to brim their cars now ;)

Lol Maxi you have thought about this much too much :D

Actually I have been trying, but even lifting the nozzle and caressing the pump handle as gently as possible, I still can't get more than a few more drips in once it's cut out.

Well I was just looking to make sure that the advice I was giving was sound and that people weren't going to get fuel leaking out of their car and ruining their paintwork.

What you need to do is actually pull the nozzle out of the filler neck and actually be VERY slowly putting fuel into the top area of the the fuel filler where it will swirl down into the filler neck. The moment you put the nozzle actually into the fuel filler it will detect pressure and will cut off the pump. I'll try and take a picture of it all when I next fill the 500 up. In my experience with other cars if you keep on trying to fill it with the nozzle in the filler neck after it's clicked a few times you run the risk of getting splashback on yourself and the car though this doesn't seem to happen with diesel as it's more viscous than petrol.

If the nozzle is this far in then you're probably missing out on about 5 or so litres of fuel capacity.
