Ok guys, with the scrappage scheme being extended I will definitely 100% have enough time to save my pennies for a new car now.

I am wondering if you can give me any reasons why I shouldn`t buy an Alfa Romeo Mito over the 500 which I was considering a few months ago.

The cheapest 500 is £6500 with scrappage discount (up £200 since I last looked:rolleyes:) but when you add on £500 for air con and £300 for ESP which are both standard on the basic Mito it is only £1700 cheaper than the Mito.

The Mito is a newer model , equally as stylish, is bigger and is faster unless I opted for the 1.4 500 but then that adds £1200 on the price.

So why should I buy a 500?

Cause the 5 is way more beautiful , it's sweet , it's got a unique character and when you get in it you feel delighted!Have you ever entered a Mito??When I did , it looked like a pumped on steroids man who has no strength at all but reminds you of the Michelin's little guy.Too fake!
Besides , Mito and the 500 aren't even comparable. They're tottaly different cars.I can't see why sb going for the 500 would turn into a Mito.Seems like you've got to decide what you want from your future car and set some priorities! Then choose..How old are you by the way? That's your first car right?

I`m 36. With a name like Puma Boy how can it be my first car?

:DThe name doesn't sertainly mean anything. You could like the puma , it could be your dad's car , maybe you were refering to the animal meaning that you're fast..I could translate it in a hundred different ways.
Well mate , if you need more interior space(i.e.if you've got a family) or aren't that amazed by the 500's style and character to pay the kind of large(for the size) amount it costs get the Mito. You'll buy more "car" with the same money...Your choice.
I personally don't like the Mito.Neither the looks(in-out) nor the mighty handling..

Look at the total cost of ownership of the two cars, i.e.

Purchase Price + 3 yrs tax + 3 yrs insurance + x thousand miles of fuel + 3 years servicing + cost of finance if appropriate LESS expected resale value (magazine charts will give predicted % of cost after 3 years).

Then compare the two and decide whether the Mito is worth the difference to you. Personally I like it (y)

Edit: bear in mind if 'speccing up' a Pop with a/c etc, this will be worth NOTHING on resale. Probably cheaper in the long run to buy a basic Lounge.

Because the Mito is a swampdonkey. Look at it. It's hideous. It looks like a grande punto that's just emerged from the burns unit.

If you have to ask get the Mito, but although I do like the car it has to be a minimum of the Lusso spec, the interior on the Turismo is quite, quite horrible. Never buy a poverty spec Alfa, it will bite you badly at re-sale time.

Minimum lusso 120tb in my book but you should sell stuff to get a 155 Veloce if you're buying a Mito.

I have driven the Mito - very nice, but in my opinion the question should be "Why buy a Fiat 500 when I can get an Grande Punto?"

Against the 500 the Punto makes more sense (if you want a bigger car). It is very like the Mito to drive (the Mito is based on it), they are both good looking & the Punto is cheaper than the Mito (often cheaper than the 500).

That would be the question I would ask, having driven all 3 (in several versions).

But, I like the 500 best of the 3...

I looked into the Mito as well before ordering a 500 and decided it wasn't worth all the extra cash and i knew i would always be wondering when it would break down as with any Alfa.

My mum test drove the Mito earlier in the year and I love it - it's not for me because it's a bit bigger than the 500 and not with so much style ... however it was lovely to drive, the top spec model has a gorgeous dash and it looks great in black with the circular lights at the back setting it off. It's defintely roomier inside than the 500.

But I'd never swap my 500 for a Mito.

No more likely to break down than a Fiat, I can't think why that would be :p

The Alfa mito i configured was theAlfa Romeo MiTo 1.4 TB 155bhp Veloce and was just under £15,000... £5,000 more than the 500.

And Alfa are more likely to break down than fiats they have consistantly been at the bottom of the What Car reliability survey..:yum:

Alfa Mito = Fiat Grande Punto = same reliability

I really like the Mito, if it was not for the A500 I think I'd have one...

If you're not in love with the 500's looks then get the Mito. Yes it's based on the GP but the interior is a lot better touch and feel, and the car's shape is better with it not trying so hard to fit 3 adults in the back in comfort.

Against the 500 you have the likes of the Twingo, Mini, Ka, Aygo... If you're not considering Corsa, Fiesta etc then you don't need the extra size or speed of the Mito.

Lastly, although the basic Mito has aircon/ESP it's still basic compared to the other models and if you come to sell it you'll be at the bottom of the spec list - getting a 500 with esp and air-con will put you towards the top when the day comes.

The Mito is I think, a fabulous looking car. Way better looking and nothing like the Grande. So what if the chassis is based on the Grande. The 500 is after all only a humble Panda in disguise.
And why should the Mito it be unreliable.?

Reasons not to buy a Mito:

1) It's hideously ugly - saw 2 on Saturday for the first time and thought it looked worse in the flesh than in the pics.
2) Dealer network - No Alfa dealer within 40 miles of here vs Fiat dealer 10 mins drive away.
3) Resale - Arguably the 500 will be a lot easier to sell on and will probably hold it's value better.
4) "You're buying a what? Is that Italian? Why didn't you buy one of those 500s?"

Up to you to choose at the end of the day but personally the 500 wins hands down for me.
