Think I have a solution for the rust on the top of the 500 suspension mounts.

If you get the rubber cap of an old cinquecento (off the top mounts) cut the 1st rim, it fits on the 500!

No rusty mounts anymore(y)

Oh I used cooper slip as they are a perfect fit.

pics can be posted if you need them;)

Thats clever (y)
nice one mate.

My car was in for a service yesterday & the dealer said whilst they are not covered under warranty (lord only knows why) they are going to replace my top mounts FOC anyway.

They also said that it's VERY common, and they actually paint the replacement ones before they fit them.
They won't replace your backbox which is totally a quality issue which couldn't be blamed on you, BUT they'll replace the topmounts which although rusty are still fine and fit for their purpose  That's just silly!

It's the dealer is doing the top mounts, apparently they do it for a lot of their customers, despite Fiat not covering under warranty.

Mark, I'm sure you will remember me mentioning this here nearly two years ago. At the time the 500 was just out and NP declared it as something "trivial". However, I persevered with my "tupperware" lid solution and to date there has been no additional rust.

What happened to the idea you came up with about a group buy of machined/fabricated covers, did they prove to be too expensive in the end?

Yep, to the tume of about £40 each IIRC.

If there was enough of a market a mould could be made which depending on batch size would reduce the cost hudely, but you would need to make 1000's, and let's face it, it's only a worry to us anal types that make up about 1% of the populus.

I seem to remember you being most insulted when I said your tupperware solution wasn't "exactly elegant" :p

i coated the tops of mine in Vaseline. I used to use it to stop water gettin in electrics and so on on my enduro bikes. Also on the engine of my Suzuki SJ as i used it through VERY deep fords. Does the job. Lasts ages aswell. (y)

heres some pics of how I did it.(y)

Big Mick proved very helpful and the Cinq caps arrived overnight after my placing an order by phone. Cost was about a fiver each. I'll have a go at fitting them tomorrow. Thanks for the idea and the contact. Much appreciated.

no problem, just to say big mick rules as far as FIAT parts are concerned!
All you have to do to the caps is cut the 1st lip off them, apply some grease to the inner lip to help the slide on.
any probs give me a shout and I can post some pics with them off my car.
