General Light sensor on dash display

Does anyone find this annoying ?

I hate the way that you can have the lights on but the car decides you dont need the dash lights on, whats going on there?
I have a big thread of this on the Abarth forum, yes it can be annoying, especially if you're driving in the rain during the day with your lights on, on a wooded road, every time you go under a tree, the dash lights up, then goes off again! on,off,on,off,on,off like a mini disco.

I agree. I always drive around in cars with my dipped beams on and like the fact that the instrument panel is illuminated. Not so in the 500.

Are you feeling ok Maxi? A quote by me followed by "I agree" from you? A forum first breakthrough! :slayer::worship:

Why do you drive with dipped on when there are DRL's on the 500 anyway?

Because I like to be visible. Just a habit from having driven green cars for the last 2 years. Being as visble as possible is always a good thing and no I don't put my fogs on to be more visible in whatever car I'm in :p

I suppose if it bothers you that much, stick a piece of black electricians tape over it and the dash lights will stay on.

Tony.

imho its a good thing as it teaches people to switch on their lights when it gets dark. Believe me a lot of people forget to as the road is sometimes well lit enough to be able to see where you're going.

On the other note it can get annoying, but its nothing that gets irritating...

I'm really sorry for digging up such and old thread but i just searched for it and it came on.
I just noticed this lighting sensor thing this morning. I have to admit that it freaked me out. Well, my beetle was doing the same but not because of a sensor but because of a faulty dash display!

When i noticed it, i said "Not again"! What the.. am i cursed or something!?

Thank you fiat forum for giving me such a relief. :D

I've never noticed this?

I haven't either... I'm confused! I've driven up the drive in the pitch black with just the dipped lights on and the dash doesn't illuminate up? There are times when I'd like it on - there are others where I'd like to be able to dim the lights a little, I find the blue full beam light on the display too bright and distracting in the dark!

Blue??? :S

Perhaps it's just me that doesn't have a problem with this. When it's dark and I've got the lights on, the instruments light up without fail. When the ambient light level is high, and I've got the lights on (fog etc.), the instruments are not lit, but are easily read because of the white on black legends. If the ambient light drops, the instruments light up red so they can be read in the dark. This is better than my Mini was - that also had red illumination that was on whenever the lights were, and I found it harder to see than the un-illuminated legends in daylight.

It`s never bothered me ,it`s quite handy when in sunlight you suddenly enter a tunnel pitch black(Example like on the m62 towards Leeds) and it lights up so you can see your dash info(y)

I for one was also pretty pleased with this useful functionality, its perfect for when the sunlight dips suddenly as mentioned above. The way its designed to only light the buttons and not the speedo is very clever and stops any confusion as to whether your lights are on or not (lit buttons, but - dim speedo= headlights off, lit speedo headlights on).

The first time I noticed it I was seriously impressed that a budget little car like the 500 had something like this. Nice one Fiat! ;)
