As some of you might remember SPAX used my car to develop a coilover kit for the 500

Just spoke with them and it is now available to buy

RRP is 524.99 + VAT

lowers 35 to 60mm, height and damping adjustable

will be available from all SPAX retailers

really pleased with the performance of the kit on road and track (y)

You evil man! A week to go before the 'ring. And they're exactly what I want for my 500!

<jason goes off to contemplate spending another 600 quid on the 500>

Go for the Bilstein's :p Mmmmmmm Bilstein :p

Still got some nasty memories of a bilstein equipped one of these that I had years ago:

I've got good memories from 2 cars so that cancels your bad memory out :p

My 131 held an epic drift around a wet roundabout back in Perth a good 8 years ago and Bilsteins transformed my mums Saab 900 :)

Plus that VS is bloody argicultural and you know it ;)

The list of VS woes was long. It was in my life for a short but very eventful year. Deeply scary things happened:

- The bolts holding the steering column under the dash fell off while I was driving - mid corner - leading to a very scary few moments of completely free moving steering wheel.
- The rear suspension bushes died 4 times in 2 months (prompting the bilstein work).
- The exhaust fell off midships and I drove over it wrapping it around the axle. There was a sort of pole vaulting moment followed by possibly the worst noise I've ever heard a car make. Then a shower of sparks.
- The number 5 cylinder shot through the head on starting one morning leading to a whole engine replacement and a truly epic 4 weeks in a rental Statesman.
- The tracking was terrible. I honestly think they came from the factory designed to crab walk down the road.
- The lights would dim for no reason.
- The wipers would randomly start.
- Oil would come out of the exhaust. I have no idea either.

The single creepiest thing for me was the stereo. I was sitting in traffic one morning listening to triple m when the sound went a bit quiet. Then quieter. I looked over in time to see the stereo lights go off and the whole head unit slowly fall backwards into the dash. Deeply unsettling. To this day I can't figure it out. It's like the faceplate just detached from the head unit and dropped its guts into the bowels of the car.

It wasn't all bad. Equipped as it was with a 5 speed, live axle, lsd and absolutely no electronic trickery or ABS it made a superb donut machine. So much circle work. Not so hot on ride quality. But truly inspiring in a field on wet grass or a dirt road.

Once, at a party on a farm we put drunk people in the tray and went mental in a field. Jack Daniels + AC/DC and tray full o' drunk people while driver is spinning = awful mess. I remember looking in the drivers mirror and seeing someone vomiting off the side like a firehose. It was epic. Bad for the paintwork. Awful stomach contents rally striping down the side. But hilarious.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm still thinking of the Spax. I've seen RobW's. Mmmm sexy!

I do hope you were playing Thunderstruck ;)

Aussie cars are horrendous in terms of build quality so I hope you realise it was a lemon and not the Bilstein's fault :p

Billies are indeed pukka, had them on my Alfa Sportwagon

What does the Bilstein kit retail at and what are the specs?

Price here is £549 for some reason the site is down so the link below is cached by google

http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache...er%20Kit%22+HE5-F577&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

All I can see in terms of specs is here ->
http://www.bilstein.de/fileadmin/user_upload/pdfs/BILSTEIN-NEWS_14_Ford_Ka_BILSTEIN_B14_GB.pdf (I've checked and it's the same part number as for the Ka suspension)

They're not adjustable in terms of damping like your Spax's are in case that's what you're wondering.

looks nice but the lack of damping adjustment is a real shortcoming if you want to optimise the car for track/road use
non adjustable will be a compromise geared more towards road use

glad i have the SPAX

Of course. But a good non-adjustable set of dampers is always better than the OEM ones or a bad set of adjustables. I think when the time comes a set of those Bilsteins will find their way onto my 500.
