Personalised number plate help please

I have seen a PNP that I quite like on the DVLA site. Can anyone tell me what the process would be for putting it onto a new car please.

I understand that they give you a form which you take to a DVLA office to register the car...but as I am still waiting for my car, how does this work ...can the dealer do it for me or do I wait until after I have the car and re-register it ....thanks

From what I understand (and I'm not 100% on this) You buy the plate and then pay 80 something when you assign it to the car. I don't think the dealer can do it as then the plate would have to go with the car if you ever got rid...

I have had a PNP for over 15 years and have used it on several new cars, including my current Grande Punto. I have always found it best to allow the dealer to register the car first. That way, it has an original registration for you to quote during any dealings with them and also a registration to return to when you come to sell the car.

I then normally ask the dealer to arrange the paperwork for the transfer of the plate, although you can do this yourself. There is an 80 charge, as I am sure that you know!! If you are financing the car, watch out for the dealer trying to add this amount on to the deal, as you will be paying interst on it for the life of your loan! I always just write out a seperate cheque.

Hope this all helps.

Re: Personalised number plate help please

As soon as we made the decision to order a new cinquecento we went onto the DVLA site to try and find a plate. We found a 59 plate that suited us (CC59 MEG). Like all the DVLA new plates it cost 390 which includes the transfer fee.

When the great day comes, the dealer registers the new car with one of their assigned numbers. This is the number that the car will revert to when sold, unless the posh plate goes with it of course. To get 'your' plates made, you'll need the DVLA form, and your driving licence or other identity evidence as per normal when getting plates done.

Next job, drive to your local DVLA centre and do the number exchange with the form that the DVLA provides when one buys the number. Swap your plates, and that's it.

Re: Personalised number plate help please

I bought a number from the DVLA site. A few days later, got a form (V750 Certificate of Entitlement) in the post. Gave it to my dealer, who then had the car registered from new, using my number. Job done, 245 all in.

The dealer can do it, we did just that with a new car & took it off before we changed cars, it simply reverted back to a correct plate for the year that the DVLA issued. I will say it was an absolute pain getting the paperwork sorted with the numbsculls at Portsmouth DVLA when the car was first registerd & this time we bought the car on the 09 plate & will then add the personal plate at our leisure.

Last time we switched plates the DVLA did it whilst my wife was away on business so for 2 days we had 2 different cars with the same registration, oops !

Re: Personalised number plate help please

What happens when you sell Tyfio? Do you have to sell the plate with it or would you buy another to go on it? (Only rule is you can't make it newer, isn't it?)

Stupid rule, if someone is stupid enough they should be punished IMHO. We didn't have any problem in Australia and the numbers on the plates meant nothing in terms of dates etc.

Re: Personalised number plate help please

DVLA prices include ALL fees (the benifit of buying from DVLA) inc the 80 to assign to a car when you buy it they send you a certificate you give it to the dealer he does the rest - simples (squeek).

DVLA prices start at 245 a real bargain... as a james bond fan I was tempted by M16 WRM read as MI6 WRM WRM = my initials - only 245.

Suzey - just to let you know I brought my 500 and had brought a plate to put on it. The dealer said they would register it for me, but I decided to allow them to register it on an 09 plate so I knew it had been done for when it goes back, and also cos they weren't going to discount the 1st registration fee!!!

Anyway, I took my form to the DVLA office in Northampton on Friday and 10 minutes later the business was done. Its very easy, just take in the V5 and the tax disc and the V750 you get from the DVLA when you buy the registration. It costs nothing extra to do it at this stage, apart from your new plates (by the way folks, ask your dealer about prices for these - proper GB plates with the BS logo etc cost me 12 for the pair!!! 12 - what a bargain - everywhere else I looked was about 35+ - even ebay for cheap non-legal ones was more expensive!!)

New plate is now on - oh and if anyone sees a 56 reg 500 abarth around, don't be confused its only me!!!

Good luck!
Thanks suzey thanked for this post
