Board....Mrs B, complains about the initial star-up, ie it turns over but doesn't catch when cold.....wondering on standards modes of start up applied by 1.2 owners?

Ta!

Mr B

Hi there.

This plagued my 1.2 for several months after ownership. Initially I didn't have a problem but I soon has the dreaded flashing milegae issue and it never seemed to start properly after that.

I went back to the dealers three times in total and each time they couldn't find a problem. The last time it was given a software update and to no avail. In the end however it just ironed itself out. I'd say probably two months after the update it started text book everytime.

It's a strange thing that seems to only affect the 1.2. Some people think it's linked to the flashing mileage and Blue&Me, but mine didn't have B&M, so who knows.

Re the technique, I just turn the key on (so all the dash lights come on), put my seatbelt on (by which time the majority have gone out), dip the clutch & turn the key to start with no throttle..

With a car with injection you should never have to give the car throttle for it to start btw :)

I never start mine with the clutch depressed, do you think I should? It states in the manual that you should.

I too have had a few probs with the car not starting first time, this happens alot after a longish journey and the car been left out in the cold for a couple of hours.

Brought the car in June this year, so I do not think it is due a ECU upgrade yet?

Had the same problem occasionally within the first few weeks of getting mine but then it just sorted itself out never to return. I always wait for dash lights to go out before starting.

Thanks, will advise her to wait that moment longer for lights to extinguish( its only 10 days old.....like a baby kitten...lol...), and yes its always advisable to depress clutch prior to starting!

:D

We have had our 1.2 for just over 3 weks and no starting problems at all.

Hubby always starts the car with the clutch in as I tend to leave the car in gear lol

I have never had any starting issues, although occasionally the initial idling is a bit odd, uneven if you will, but a quick bit of throttle sorts it.

I start it as the manual says to start it! Shockingly enough!

I put the clutch in, turn the key to MAR or whatever, the first point where you can hear the fuel being pumped down the fuel line, (try with the door open, you will hear it), then once all the lights have gone out, turn the key to the end and it tends to start very quickly.

As someone mentioned, putting your seatbelt on between half turn and starting is a good habit, as the timing is perfect. And you avoid the screeching beep of the 500's anger at you for not wearing a seatbelt.

No problems! :)

The 500 is the first car I've ever been able to hear the fuel pump on!

Charlie,

Talking about that annoying screeching, I was on my way to work one morning: Got in the car put my heavy bag on the passenger seat and reversed out of the garage. I was going down the road and I spotted on the dash the seat belt sign flashing.
So I un did my belt and did it up a few times, to no avail. By this time it started to beep that awlful screech aswell. I worked out if you have a heavy weight on the passenger seat it thinks that you have a passenger onboard and screeches away! I think next time I will use the seat belt to secure my bag in, or use the boot!

When was your last car built? The 1800's? :p Cars have been doing that for ages.

My 04 Panda did not do that either. It really bugs me that if you are just moving your car and have to put your seat belt on to stop the idiot nanny state buzzing thing.
Yeah I hate wearing a seatbelt and not having the opportunity to fly through the windscreen! Bloody nanny state.
