General BSM using the Fiat 500

Strangely enough I had someone who is a driving instructor tell me that turning your head during the test is a fail mark. You should have your mirrors adjusted so you never turn your head far. Scary. I was always taught having a quick look was a good thing.

I'm a driving instructor and this is simply mind boggling! If you don't check your blind spot during manoeuvres, it's an AUTOMATIC FAIL!! For example, when doing a reverse park, when your car swings out into the road, if you don't turn your head to check your blindspot, you FAIL! Amazes me that an instructor would tell a pupil this! Obviously mirrors should be adjusted correctly, but a blind spot is what it says, BLIND!! Your mirrors can't see everything!

There are some people on this forum who say that the 500 mirrors see all. I once passed a motorcycle on purpose and put him in my blind spot intentionally and I didn't see him at all. THE 500 IS LIKE EVERY OTHER CAR AND HAS A BLIND SPOT PEOPLE!!!!!

As a biker and safe driver over many years there is NOTHING that would stop me doing the "life-saver" in a car or on a bike!

Worth mentioning also that the BSM Fiat 500's do have air-con. The first batch they got didn't, but all newer ones do. They are quite well kitted out actually, and BSM's pass rate has gone up since they started using them. No car is perfect, but as a learner car goes, they're excellent. I don't work for them by the way lol!

And as mentioned above EVERY car has a blind spot! Don't check it at your peril! A 'life saver' as mentioned!!

And also purleaaase tell me you teach people on when to turn on headlights! I've lost count of driving school vehicles driving without lights when it is already pretty dark, looks like they only wait until it's pitch black to think to themselves Oh wait, maybe I should put them on! :bang:
A reminder: lights are not only useful to see but to be seen, it is equally important!
I apologize for my rant, I had to get it off my chest. :p

(Note to self: now will you just calm down! :D )

Lol, I do actually. I'm quite sensitive to having my lights on myself, so always am in the habit of making sure they're on when daylight starts to go. Must say, I don't see too many learner cars with them off when they should be on though. I guess it just depends on the area.

When I did my bike trainig i was told "treat every one else as idiots"
it works for me.
and yes the quick lifesaver look makes all the difference.

When I did my bike test and the chief examiner saw my 'Advanced Driving Licence' he said... "that ain gonna help you here Sonnie"... I knew I was in for a hard time !!!

... still passed first time even though he took me through a staggered 'T' junction where I had to get a million life-saver moves in about 10 yards... Ha!

Oddly a mate was in my car she is learning to drive and commented while I was pulling onto a motorway and checking my blindspot (with a quick life saver over my shoulder) before I moved right that she had been told not to do that...wonder what the f**k is going on with instructors these days...

I think it's just one of those things. People seem to think the bigger and better shaped mirrors on cars these days give them 100% vision and as I said before some people on this forum have said that the 500 doesn't have a blindspot and therefore they don't do a lifesaver.

Checking is a habit for me because my first two cars didn't even have a mirror on the left side because they were both 70's cars. The 500 is horrible to check your blind spot on as well because the B and C pillars just don't make for good visibility.

I agree 100%, our 500 replaced a Ford Mondeo estate and the Mondeo had vastly superior visibilty when reversing out of our driveway than the 500 does. Before anyone says reverse in, the parking space is such that it's easiest to go forwards in and backwards out. :D

My car has delivery van sized mirrors (look at a pre-face lift swift next time you see one) the mirrors are huuuuuage but it still has the same old blindspots. Also mate who is learning to drive isn't using a 500 so they are not promoting a lifesaver in other cars as well.
