popped into dealer today as concerned at no of bonnet chips where white undercoat showing through. Dealer said "thats the trouble with red, its a brittle colour". He showed me his red car which had same issues. So it looks like its out with the paint stick and Lloyd instructions...be warned! Wish I'd ordered white now....

That's strange. The smart repair specialists that come to do "paintless dent removals" at our garage, say that white is the brittle colour!

Modern, water-based paints are "softer", which is why they can chip so easily. White is supposedly "brittle", and therefore prone to cracking. Smart repair specialists heat it up gently when removing dents.

Oddly enough there is a thread on Abarthisti forum about stone chip protection - I thought about it when I ordered mine but not not done anything as mines still a month away.

BUT I have now contacted a couple of companys that either supply or fit pre cut kits for prices and 3M to see of I can get the suff by the roll and do my own as I have in the past overseas (its a b!tch when you move and lose all your contacts :( ).

I will report back when I hear...Bother just thought am I allowed to post such info as I do not have personal experiece of these companies/products - I do not want to fall foul of the moderators:worship:... could a moderator :worship: please confirm yes or no Thanks (for the record companies I've contacted are from links on Abarthisti forum and 3M one of my major suppliers of bodyshop consumables)

Maybe its less obvious if the undercoat is white. Starting to panic now :-( x

It could be of course I am just more paranoid as I love the car but also have two year old silver punto grande with not a mark on the bonnet.....

For the use of information spreading, without personal gain. I think we would all like to see what can be done.

I raised this before, my red 500 is peppered with chips (12k on the clock). Last time IIRC the conclusion was that the red is hard (and brittle) and hence chips but doesn't scuff particularly (i.e. country lane hedges), and had (say) 2 coats only. Whereas white was soft and had (say) three coats, so it didn't chip but does crack/scuff etc.

HTH
