My brother's going to put them on for me tonight but he's just had a look at the instructions and is wondering do you have to take the mirror out first? Or can you just wiggle the casing off? He's a bit worried about taking the mirror out as he thinks he'll damage it. He's just had a go at wiggling it off without taking the mirror out but it's so tightly packed he's having trouble with it.

Any help would be gratefully received, thanks!

Notts (amongst others) has done this so pm him or just wait until he or someone else spills the beans.

I can give you my understanding of how it is done but please don't take it as gospel.

I think you angle the mirror glass down as far as possible (biggest gap at top) and then use a broad flat bladed instrument to prise the glass backing off of the balljoint. Once the glass is off then you can press down the lugs that secure the housing and remove them.

Refitting is the opposite but I am not sure if it is easier to refit the glass first whilst the backs are removed or if it is just as easy to refit the glass last.

we fitted ours in December when it was very cold and we had to remove the glass as the cold plastic wasn't very pliable.

i know of others who have fitted their's in warmer weather and managed to just clip the old ones on and the new ones off.

so it may be worth a go without first.

I tried just popping them off and it didnt work. The lugs that hold the mirror on have little locating tabs on them and just forcing it from outside will break them off.

As Grimwau says, tilt down the mirror so you get the biggest gap you can, and gently pull forward the mirror with your fingers if you can get them in (I did) or use a flat bladed tool to prise the mirror off. I didnt do this as I didnt want to put too much force on the mirror concentrated in one spot, which is why I used my fingers. Then when the mirror is off you can use a screwdriver to dislocate the little lugs on all the tabs on the mirror casing, it will then easily pull off. Refitting is easy, line up the tabs and push into place. Then relocate the mirror. Job done. Cup of tea.

Nah they dont. You have to use a bit of force. Mirrors are the same on the 500 and GP and i have taken my covers off that way several times before and havent broken any of the clips. If chrome mirror caps are going on anyway it hardly matters if they break or not anyway.

Opinion differs then. Follow whichever method seems most appropriate. I don't care.
I'm with Notts. I just fitted some myself...as fog descended mid process, how apt.

My only additional advice is as follows:

-Once you have moved the mirrors down (using the controls inside the car) so you can get your fingers around the top, then start at the point furthest away from the car, as that is where the clip for the mirror is.

-If you start too close to the car or in the middle you may feel like your about to break, I started here and it felt very uncomfortable.

So for a right hand drive this is the edge away from the car. Then as said it is pretty obvious how to unhouse the old cover and put the new one on.

I couldn't squeeze mine off with out removing the mirror, don't know how you could as the plastic clasps lock in!

I will upload the instruction leaflets for the mirrors, a bar and chrome bonnet line, unless mods shoot me down for infringement!

:worship:please:worship: can I have your old ones as I want to paint them a different colour.
Thanks Dave Q:)

Just fitted a pair of Chrome covers on my door miroors. Took approximately 10 minutes by following the fitting instructions :). Adjust the mirror so it facing down thus giving a wide gap at the top of the mirror. Start from the outside and ease a finger into the gap :D bit tight, then work it towards the car the mirror should pop of just before the finger gets to the centre of the mirror (y). Then ease each retaining clip which holds the cover on off its catch and push the cover off. Hey presto the cover comes off. Install Chrome cover in reverse sequence.

Nice bit of Chrome sets the car off nicely:devil:.

For fitting instructions I have uploaded them to this thread.

Hello
Your post helped alot THANK YOUU
Just got mine on yesterday.. but i think.. theres a tiny bit at the bottom that didnt go in at both sides is that normal or should i have them fitted again?

Thanks The Leebee! I managed to change mine without any problems except I dropped BOTH the caps I was replacing on to a stoned ground and managed to mark both of them. Can't sell them now but I guess (hope) I wouldn't get much for them anyway???

Cheers!

Possibly a bit too late :( of a reply but I received mine the other week and did it at half time between the spain v germany game :)

My advice is don't read the official instructions, get a small slotted screwdriver and start working down to upwards (as any marks in the plastic will not be visible should you create any).
Once you have the screwdriver underneath, start working your way around the cap (but the bit of the cap furthest away from the car first).
Use a bit of force and you will be able to pop out the cap from its fittings, don't do it too quickly otherwise the cap will fly off :D

Then to fit the new mirror cap, push it into its clippings and voila, done without even so much as touching the actual mirror.
