I'm after buying a 500 Pop 1.2 next week using the scrappage scheme. While I can see the delivery times are in the 8 - 14 week range, what are the chances that the dealer will take my car within the next couple of weeks, given I'll use cash outright? I'm using a 1.9TDi Peugeot 306 with an MOT due to expire on 5th July; it isn't going to pass again!

Is is likely?

Hi David2,

A lot depends on how much space the dealer has out back. My dealer didn't want my old car until I came and collected the new one. Saying that, the old car is still in their back yard, two weeks after I took delivery of the car that was sitting unregistered in the showroom.

Its best to ask them - I think that there is already a backlog of cars waiting to be collected for scrappage and many dealers don't have a great deal of space (but they do tend to want your money). You have two other options though - SORN the car and park it off road somewhere (if you have the space, or even at the dealership!) or convince the dealer you don't want to wait ages for your new car and buy one they already have that is unregistered.

Its not just Fiat that have this problem - Volvo quoted 16 weeks to my in-laws for a bog-standard C30. Both Fiat and Volvo dealers said that most motor manufacturers were caught off-guard when the scrappage deal was announced.

Good luck and welcome to the delights of owning a Fiat!

When we were scrapping my wife's old car and waiting for her new 500 her old car started falling to bits. The exhaust had rusted and broke into 2 halves going over a speedhump so I taped it up. Then a few days later one of the tyres blew out (nail between the tread blocks) so I put the spare on.
We told the dealer about this when he called with a status update and that we didn't really want to buy a new tyre & exhaust for the car going to be scrapped.
He offered to take it off us before delivery of the new one, so it was an option offered to us, I suppose it depends on your dealer and their circumstances.

No it doesn't. Your MOT can be up by 14 days when you place your order. That's it

There sounds like there is lots of conflicting info on the scrappage deal. I have a 500 on order and we are scrapping an old vehicle of ours. It's MOT was due this week and it failed but we are going to pay to get everything fixed so that we could use it (spend £280 to get £2000 still seems a good deal) but are you saying we don't need to do this? It had a valid MOT when we ordered the 500.

You only need the MOT in place when you order the car - have a look on the Government website - type 'directgov scrappage scheme' into google (this forum won't let me post urls yet!)
My dealer originally tried to say it had to be in place at time of delivery but I presented him with this and he was ok. (My MOT's up in July but not delivering til late July)

Having said that, my dealer tried to get out of knocking off the full £2k too - but that's another story!!!!

Isnt the MoT requirement just to stop shap-boys buying a scrapper for £100 and getting £2,000 off a new car when they have owned it a while (cant remember how long)?

If so they should take the car as long as it has MoT when the deal is done.

You have to own the car for a full year before you can use it for the scrappage scheme. Even if you bought an old car when the Chancellor announced it in the budget (20ish April from memory) the scheme would have been over with by the time you've owned it for a year.

Update: it worked, with a little bit of "oh, I won't buy it from here" then with the salesman. I ended up going for a 1.2 Lounge in White, Black/Ivory interior + side rubbing strip which I was content with until I saw the Electroclash Grey in real life yesterday - phoned today, and changed it. That colour is gorgeous.

Now to wait....
