Taking my little baby to dealers tomorrow as it's having starting issues :( tends to happen more when it's cold.

Will mention the software update and see what happens

Have you tried changing where you fill up - makes a big difference to Bj. He can be an absolute swine if he gets the wrong petrol (Usually cheap supermarket stuff)

Ah right, I normally fill up at BP - where do you think is the best place?

Btw they didnt have a courtesy car I could have and needed one as they would keep it over night, so now taking it in on Tuesday next week

I always tried to put Shell in my old 500 1.4 Sport. It's now V-Power for the Abarth!

ah right will try that also thanks Sikersh (y)

btw I'm going to start a thread about this, but seeing as you have just mentioned Shell, the other half and also someone at work has had problems when using credit/debit card to pay at Shell garages. On both accounts someone in Indonesia has tried to withdraw money from their accounts. I'd pay with cash if I were you to be on the safe side :)

I have got to contact my dealer tomorrow as my one month old 1.2 lounge is devoloping starting issue, last weekend after a long run (250 miles) it didnt want to restart 30 minutes after getting back struggled then cloud of smoke, Then today struggled to start again then running on 3 cylinders for about 10 seconds then running fine, definate call tomorrow to dealer!!

Have to say that I've been having starting issues pretty much from about 850 miles. I had the flashing mileage one morning and ever since its been intermittent when starting.

I had the software update and it seemed to fix the problem. That didn't last all that long.

I've changed petrol and with little result. The only variable I can find is that its harder to start when its damp.

Ironically it starts perfectly when I just touch the throttle slightly.

Still its a part of the 500 that I've grown to love and hate. Hasn't stopped me wanting the 500 C either :D(y)

Mine used to have this problem unless I waited for the fuel pump to activate and de-activate before starting. It means waiting before you turn the engine on, but it seems to fix it.

Unless it's really cold in which case you'll have to be gentle with it to get it to start. (y)

Interesting that this problem only seems to affect the 1.2 engine. My own 1.4 seems to be a bullet-proof starter, no matter how cold the morning.

I thought that there was a software update for this that cured it ?

If this engine is in the Ka there will be alot of pissed Ford drivers who dont expect a new car not to start - It seems that Fiat drivers/dealers are more forgiving of this "feature" - I hope Fiats IT crowd get it sorted quick.

Well she is being looked at today, I said about it having problems starting (sometimes) on cold and damp mornings and that it will be a little bastard and start first time when they try it lol

We'll see what they say, I'm hoping they will do the whole software update thing and at least then I can see if I am still having problems...

Hi, i had the same problem on my Punto HGT 2001.

What i have found helps if you fully push the throttle down while you turn the key and wait for all the clicking, lights and whirring to stop then release the throttle. Then just start it as normal.

Lets me know if it works for you too

i used to do exactly the same with my last car, a seicento. absolutely faultness at starting if you waited for the fuel pump for a few seconds, but occasional hot start problems if you didnt...ive just carried that over to my 500 without thinking, and so far no problems either :)

** Update **

She is back from the dealers and is better than she was before :D

Drives a lot better also - get the upgrade if you haven't had it already (y)
