Also found on cinquecentisti.com (http://www.cinquecentisti.com/content/richiamo-500-freni-tamburo-posteriori) that there is a Fiat 500 recall. Affected chassis number range is 206893 - 279954. Of course the 1.2 and 1.3 diesel versions are affected only because the 1.4 version has front and rear disc brakes. Basically the problem is some loose or flimsy screws in the rear drum brakes. On the below link you can find the Italian version (I've already requested the English version) of the recall but I suggest you to check it because the repair process is very well illustrated with photos!

If you have the flashing mileage issue check the following thread because it seems there is a software update for it.

feeling slightly foolish asking this

both of us have been searching in the engine bay and then the rest of the car for the VIN plate, where on earth is it on a 500?

Re: Fiat 500 recall due to rear drum break issues

The plate is to be found on the left side of the boot floor (where the spare wheel is located) and it bears the following identification data:
- Homologation number
- Vehicle type code
- Chassis number
- Maximum vehicle weight fully loaded
- Maximum vehicle weight fully loaded with trailer
- Maximum vehicle weight on front axle
- Maximum vehicle weight on rear axle
- Engine type
- Body version code
- Spare part code

In Hungary the registration book also contains the chassis number but I think the UK reg. book should contain this info also, right?!

sorry Im being a bit woolly on this, is the above list in the order in which the numbers appear on the plate in the back of the car, ie the chassis number is the 3rd one down from the top? Just had a look and there seem to be about 3 6 figure numbers on there. It is dark tho in my defence! :D

You can check the order in the handbook (page 148) but just to make sure I attached a picture about the plate. (y)

B Homologation number.
C Vehicle type code.
D Chassis number.
E Maximum vehicle weight fully loaded.
F Maximum vehicle weight fully loaded with trailer.
G Maximum vehicle weight on front axle.
H Maximum vehicle weight on rear axle.
I Engine type.
L Body version code.
M Spare part code.
N Smoke opacity index (for diesel engines).

I noticed this when doing the sound insulating stuff, talk about easy to change the VIN, a pathetic piece of tin held on with removable plastic rivots!

It will be located in other places no doubt, most other fiats have it inside the car, on that silly plate and under the bonnet somewhere.

As for the drum issue, dad took his 500 to Arnold Clarke and they reckon their is no such recall on any of the 500's..........saying that though they also didn't know a 500 estate was due for launch in 2010. Auto Express seems to know more than most of the dealerships(y)

I just spoke to Harwoods (Isle of Wight), and they confirmed that my 500 is affected by this. I then spoke to Wessex (Cardiff) to book it for the work to be done next week. They weren't aware of the problem. It's booked in anyway though.

Re: Fiat 500 recall due to rear drum break issues

Finally got around to checking my chassis number, and it is one of the affected ones... so will have to phone dealer as they havent contacted me! May ask them for a replacement wheel centre too as one is flaking and if there are any software updates! Has anyone else actually been rung by their dealer about this or have most people been proactive and taken their cars in first?
