Hi guys

Just visited the Fiat UK site and noticed on the 500 configurator that under versions there's now the Start&Stop model available.

If you click on it nothing seems to happen in terms of your configured car, so may be its appeared by mistake a little too soon???

Plus, to my disgust and horror ye ye green has vanished!! This leaves some pretty boring colours to choose from now, IMHO

Personally I've always thought the ye ye green was horrific. Like some rotten pea soup vomit colour. I'll shed no tears that's it gone.

As for stop start, are people really asking for this feature? Can someone explain to me the appeal?

Ok, so the 500 is a "retro car".

The "retro colours" of Ye Ye Green, Punk Grey, Calypso Orange & Jive Blue have now gone. What a terrible shame.

If I don't buy an Abarth in Primer Grey for my next 500, I was going to opt for chipped Diesel in Calypso or Ye Ye.

If you have ever had it, its quite a decent function, think that after all the fuss that fiat made about being one of the lowest CO2 producing car makers, that they have to release some specific 'green' models, with some real green features.

It is somewhat ironic that they then delete the 'Green' colour though:D!!!

Have to agree, the green is a tad yuck (sorry for those who have one), just a bit dull :(

It stops the engine when the car stops and starts again as the clutch is depressed.

The appeal is that part of the official fuel consumption test is at idle. So guess what, the CO2 number (and road tax) go down.

But the air con won't run when stationery.

I guess if ultimate low tax is the goal then fair enough. Doesn't appeal to me.

I was a little concerned about premature wear on the starter motor and ringear but I see from Ricardo's link that it uses a combined starter/generator.

When I started my apprenticeship with Honda the N360, N600 and Coupe Z used this technology, albeit without the stop start bit and it is an eerie feeling in normal use when you turn the key, expecting to hear the starter engage and all you get is silence.

Mind you that was fitted directly to the end of the crankshaft so I imagine the 500 will need to have a chain drive or similar. As most of our driving is around town I might consider it as an option but if it was offered on the diesel I would think it would take even longer to reach operating temperature leaving you pretty cold sitting in a winter traffic jam as well as a possible detrimental effect on the DPF system.

The smart has this technology, the drive from the starter/generator is via a belt!!!! So, if the belt slips you aint starting:) It is weird not hearing a traditional starter engage, and even weirder when the engine stops when you stop, and then starts again... all very space age but if it saves fuel then great:)

Seems to have the Pop / Sport seats, with split rear seats & the chrome kit from the Lounge as well as the usual stuff on the Lounge / Sport (B&M, AirCon etc) & passenger seat memory as standard..

Looks like its a Lounge with Pop seats... has anyone noticed Mod Blue has gone now?
The colour chart is starting to look very bland now... alamost like Audis!!!

Rob, theres hardly less to do... its a good thing saving fuel. I would imagine it is able to be switched off, it is on many stop and start systems.
