Mileage Range reading stop when low ??

Hi All,

When my fue is getting low and I'm down to the last 50 odd miles of range (according to the dash) the reading will stop and go blank with I think a low fuel message.. Is this normal? Does the computer get better a estimating the low range with age? I've only done 1300 miles so far an know roughly how many miles I can get out of a tank, get down to the last bar on the fuel level then when refilling only get in 28-29 litres.. (I presume Fiat don't want you to run out of fuel) but I could do another 45 miles on the 5 litres left in the tank?

Any thoughts?

Cheers, Steve...

PS: I've been resetting the Trip B at every refuel, and Trip A at 1000 miles..

Mine disappears when the car beeps at me to warn me of low fuel at (usually) 35 miles left to go. The fuel light normally comes on at 79 miles to go.

every fiat ive had with the trip computer (punto, stilo, panda, now 500) has had the range readout go blank when the petrol light comes on, I think its a feature to tell you, "fill me up now!!!"

there is no way it can estimate once it gets to a gallon or so left, especially if you start booting it.

...and of course then you'd get loads of posts on here, saying, "my trip computer said I could go another 23 miles and then it died and ran out of petrol. Bloody fiats..." or something similar. Poor fiat get the blame for everything!

My renault used to go blank at 50 miles, bit annoying, but i learnt to deal with it. Ive never let my 500 go low enough to blank out yet.

you should always have enough fuel in your tank especially on older cars or you risk sucking up debri at bottom of tank.

The whole debris at the bottom of the tank thing is urban myth I think. I've taken a few fuel tanks out of 20 year old cars and found not a grain of dirt on the gauze pick up for the pump and in fact it was by far the only part of the car that still looked brand new, it was spotless inside the tank.

Then I guess we disagree on this one, I too have been taking out tanks for over 20 years and found debri in many of them. Plastic tanks have a definate advantage but when a in-tank pump breaks up (as they do) you are left with metal swarf inside the tank. (I have photos of a few ducato/ulysse/doblo tanks with plenty of debri inside)

Lloyd - mine always says 79 miles too. I've gone to 25 miles and then chickened out and filled up lol. And when i fill up it's always 439 even if i've squeezed a bit more fuel in lol

Re: Mileage Range reading stop when low ??

Thanks for your experiences guys (& gals)... Just curious really... As you say, best not to run dry anyway, at least the 500 is cheap to fill up (compared to my previous medium sized cars).. I'd never get the quoted 450ish miles from the range out of a tank no matter how economically I drive in town.. It's just the way it is...

Snowing here near Hampton Court, looking forward to the journey to work in the morning , nice and easy, no traction control and a front wheel drive car for the first time in ages...

Steve..

Just filled up today, range display blanked at 30 miles and I did another 15/20. Filled up with 37 litres began to wonder where it was going.
