I've had a search through the forums and seen the possibilities for roof racks and tow-bar mounted cycle racks. Now I've got a 1.2 sport with a spoiler and as far as I can tell I canna fit a rear mounted cycle rack ? Has anyone with a spoiler fitted 500 come up with any good ideas or found a product to suit ?

Cheers

JB:)

Hi, I haven't fitted one but it's worth saying that the tow bar racks are a lot safer. The tied ones have a proven tendency to beocme loose and scratch or even fall off. They are now banned by place like decathlon.

Good topic this - I was going to ask about bike racks. I don't have a spoiler JB, so I can't shed any light on your problem.

My situation is that (quote from dealer) "the Australian importer won't honour the warranty if you fit a tow bar". On this basis I purchased the luggage rack in the hope that I could somehow modify it to take a bike. This looks like more trouble than it's worth though as the rack is way too close to the car body & window - so don't go down this route JB.

What I don't get is that if Fiat say the car is good to tow why would the Aussie importer have a problem with it? It's Fiats warranty and therefore they would surley bear the cost of any claim.

In Aus, all Fiat claims are probably the responsibility of the importer, Ateco (IIRC) They dont want the chance of something going wrong due to the towball ripping the guts out of the back of the car, as that would cost them $$

My question would be, why do you want to tow in a 500? A 6x4 will nearly be too big for the car.

I still don't see what they're worried about. From memory Fiat have rated the car good to tow 400kg or 800kg with trailer brakes. They wouldn't do this unless they were confident that the car was up to it. Sure, If someone exceeds the rated load things could unravel pretty quickly, but then the fault lies with whoever exceeded the max load, not Fiat or Ateco.

Mainly I want to carry a pushbike and on the odd occaision hitch up a box trailer to take crap to the tip or pick up something bulky from the hardware. The 1.3JTD would be more than capable of this. I have no plans for towing a boat or a caravan.

dont forget your light boards, see way too many cycle racks on cars with out one and you cant see brake lights or indicators

Yup, I agree. I've got bike, lights and a rack but just concerned about messing the warranty if I get a tow bar put on. Found a company in Queensland that is importing the euro made 500 rack:

Removable hitch so very discreet & I won't bash my shins on it when I'm putting the shopping in the back...
