Three lines tucked away at the bottom of a letter sent out by Fiat to the dealer network yesterday...

Fiat 500 Convertible
The Fiat 500 Convertible will hit the UK market in April 2009
The UK will be the second market to launch it, together with Italy
From April 2009 we anticipate the Fiat 500 Convertible will grow to represent around 18% of the total Fiat 500 UK volumes

Hi All, I was at the Nurburgring a couple of weeks ago, sadly I didn`t get a photo shot of a different 500, this one had the rubber masking on the centre part of the roof section from the top of the front windsceen back to the hatch.....!!! Well..... Whats going on there folk..?

hmmm intresting..wel see. they should just do a rag top and a hard top version ..gives customers more choice.i like the tlook of the rag tops more than metal folding roofs but they weight more than a house lol

Just found this on the web

From autocar

The 500 soft-top will have a simple roof mechanism to keep costs down, just like the original 500 and its predecessor, the Topolino.
Both of those cars featured a fabric roof and rear screen that folded away on rails supported by the original car’s pillars and side windows.
That’s the system that Fiat is engineering for the new 500 convertible, as can be seen on the spy pictures, which show the side structure and glasshouse of the hatch intact.
To keep the folding system simple, the roof stacks on top of the rear parcel shelf, rather than slotting into a storage bin. That allows Fiat to retain the lower part of the existing hatch pressing and to hinge it from the parcel shelf.
The roof is understood to have a manual operation, again to keep costs down, although a powered option is likely.

Hope this helps

Could go either way in my opinion!

Hope it doesn't look as bad as the Punto convertible did - that reminded me of a sandal!

It also, from that picture, puts me in mind of a Citroen Pluriel.

and they're hideous...

Saw these pics of a version of a proper convertible version of the 500 which has made it into a 2 seater... personally, I think this looks wicked. I have read as above tho that this is not what the production one will look like and will be like the original with only the middle part of the roof folding, much like the pluriel (which is ugly IMO!) Im sure the 500 will pull it off tho and still look cute!

I dont actually think it is this one, I think it has a central cloth roof that folds right down to the back but the side window panels are still there (think the original 500 was like this too). I posted these pics of the red one earlier but this isnt the production one, from what Ive read!
