General Which winter tyres are people going for

Interesting. Both TUV and a couple of magazines have tested Michelin Cross-Climates and found them to be far superior to summer tyres in snow and ice, and to be virtually as good as summer tyres in the dry and warm. I've got a set of them on our Suzuki S-Cross but haven't been on snow in them yet. Unfortunately they aren't available in the size I need for the 500.

Maybe the Michelin all seasons would have been better. I didn't look at the all seasons close enough to determine the manufacturer, so I don't know what they were.

Also, maybe TUV don't test the tyres on a heavy, relatively top-heavy SUV, which really exacerbates any compromise in performance.

The problem out here in winter is that people drive out to go skiing, think "I've got a 4x4 SUV so I don't need marketing gimmick tyres too." They get lured into a false sense of security because 4x4 really helps them get going but is no better than any 2wd car for stopping. Then they look surprised when they're in the ditch.

In winter, I see more SUVs (mostly X5s, though that may be due to their popularity) in Alpine ditches than any other car.

The X5 is in the ditch because they generally are fitted with 'performance' summer tyres = )

Snoozeboy, it just occurred to me, in colder climes studded tyres are often fitted. Are you referring to these or just plain winter tyres? I would imagine the studded ones make a world of difference on snow.

Just plain winters. The ones with the mountain and snowflake logo

One teensy weensy wee issue with winter or all season tyres.....a puncture.

This morning's commute was undertaken on three Vredestein Quatracs and a space saver, on very low temperature roads.....interesting to say the least.
