General Hating my 500

mine has been in about a month ago and i mentioned the shuddering and poor start and they said there isn any message on the computer or errors and no update available, so update wont help mine, wish i could get rid of it, oh and forgot to mention ice on inside of window when cold, and before anyone says its been cold, i have only ever experienced this when i have had bangers and the car has been leaking and then it condensated and frozen, and as far as heating i have it on full red constantly and on speed two and it only comfortable, not red hot as my old car was, also if there is a little bit of rain outside, then car constantly mists up, feel like i have got one of the original 500s from the 50's with just new clothes on. Its easy by the way for any of you to say the ones who have problems are being picky, but if yours is all great then its esy to say that, but when you put your faith in buying a new car for reliability and trouble free motoring then it pretty heart breaking when its not right and you cant afford to loose money changing it, and in fact why should anyone have to loose money changing by trading it in, and why should i have to live with these problems day in day out.

contact customer services, ask for a case reference and list the faults you are concerned about. Liasion with nearest DET who in turn will liasion with Fiat. Let us know how you get on (y)

thank you all for your comments, and i dont mean to sound ungreatful but i dont want a car that requires such sensitive treatment. its a little embarrasing wen people oh why did u buy a fiat, and i defend the marque, to then find i come out of work on a cold evening, i have to think right i have to turn the key so far let the lights go out, now start her, to hear her try and try starting, now she's finally come to life i may as well get back out and scrape it, because i gotta wait for the ice to melt inside, and i cant afford to breath in it cos it just mists up like a steam room. once i've scraped it i still have to sit and wait for ten minutes before i can see. start driving and heating up to normal on temp guage so think right i'll warm feet, turn it to feet and a couple of mins later and window remisting.

all this by the way in front of friends in older cars big and small, like 2001 plates who start up 2mins and their away and i'm still sat waiting, what is this all about, i dont think this is how modern motoring should be.

manual aircon.

I'm not being funny but what cars are they driving from 2001 that can start up and be driven away safely from freezing temperatures in 2 minutes? Most of my relatives have popular cars from 2001 and they're terrible for build quality.

IIRC there is a setting on the dial to blow the air at both the windscreen and your feet.

That's less to do with the car's build quality, more to do with the laws of science, unfortunately.

astra, corsa, and no i dont want a vauxhall, and the certainly dont have ice on the inside of window either unlike the fabulous 500.

oh really is that what the window and feet mean on that symbol, thanks for educating me. funny how its crap wen its on that and to get some heat on feet it just has to be on feet with fan at 2speed

I have never had ice on the inside of either of my 500's & I've had one longer than most on here. I think you are being over critical to b honest, it's a £9000 car (albeit a good one), not a £20,000 car at the end of the day.

My dad has a Corsa from 2002, it starts first thing in the winter but the car doesn't de-mist or defrost anywhere near within 2 minutes.

Was only trying to help. No wonder the garage wants nothing to do with you if you talk to them like that.

i wasnt being funny with you, however it just bugs me that because others dont hav the same challenges with the car that they say that its never happened to them or theirs doesnt do that, like we are making it up. why on earth wud i make it up and waste my time looking for resolutions on here wen i cud be doing better things frankly.

its like its taken personally on here, i own a 500 so its not like i'm one of those none owners who slag fiats off for the sake of it, but i do feel i am prob justified in bein fed up with this car by now with its challenges its presenting, oh and my 2 minutes may have been a little ambitious, but feels like that wen i'm sat 10-15 melting my frigid baby

jakedeano, lloyd (as is everyone) is only trying to help, selecting down (foot) position on any car after a cold start will mist up the windows. I like warm feet so do this often but I leave window open to keep interior glass clear, dont mind rest of me cold but hate cold feet!

I understand that your pretty p*ssed off at the moment but there is a right way to go about things, please read post #22 again, all of the faults you listed are easily rectified.

Need to try the unpopular cars. My Marea is an excellent cold starter. It just goes through suspension components like milky bars.

I get bad condensation on the inside of the screen on my golf aswell as 500. It's just the cold weather. Must admit the 500 does steam up pretty bad even when warm and I am just glad I have the aircon to clear it. Had the steaming up and wet screen inside with a Grande punto as well and thought it had a leak but think it was just the screen shape/weather because nothing else was ever wet.

hate it, i am beginning too, the problems i have had with mine and had to have fiat uk assist and they are no more better than the dealer.

problems:
wiper shudder
washer jet keeps working way loose
microphone replaced already as faulty
usb port playing up, no media when stick in
trouble starting, shuddering at idle
clunking near n/s front wheel
vibration from n/s under bonnet and when changing gear at low speed
mileage flashes
wipers replaced, no resolution
left heated mirror replaced
heating on feet is pants, not very warm

i wish i could reject this car and have a new one, its 1.2 sport and done 2000 miles

Hi Jake,

did you get the clunking sorted yet? I have had this problem too when going over bumps and despite having 4 mornings off work and a new steering rack which has made it a lot better, the problem is still there slightly.

To cap it all yesterday I was washing my 500 to get the salt off. I noticed that, on the passenger side windscreen wiper, the arrangement that holds the blade in place had fallen apart exposing a sharp piece of metal which has scratched the screen all the way round the edge of the wiper sweep over the last 2 weeks since I last washed it.

It would seem that as more 500s are coming into existence that more problems are surfacing...

Customer services? Don't bother - waste of time.:bang:

NO, do bother with customer services! They cant fix your car but if you get a case/reference number (which your dealer also gets) then you just communicate with the dealer (prefably DET) as its a 3 way communication so all info/progress is shared between all parties.

Hi Jake,

Shame you are having such problems with your car ........

My windows mist up, but they did on my ford too and that was only 18 months old when i sold it on. (funnily enough when they are misted up I get round circle shapes on the windows .. wonder if it's the machine shape when they put the windows in? lol).

I think most of your problems could be sorted if you take it to the dealer or contact fiat CS if you don't get anywhere with the dealer.

It IS a lovely car but at the end of the day I expected a few shakes and rattles as I've previously owned a panda (old style) and a seicento ... some of the rattles are part of the makeup of the small Fiat cars and I for one wouldn't change them for the world.

I've found the heater on the feet isn't that good but the whole car warms up so quickly as it's so small that it hasn't really bothered me.

Hope you get things sorted so you can start enjoying your 500 :)

H.

We've had our car for 1 month and have nearly done 1,000 miles, have not experienced ANY of the problems you have listed.

Take it back to your dealer and tell them your problems, they won't get sorted out unless someone who can do something about it, knows about it!

Hi guys, the little 500 is booked in for next wed 14th, and i'm taking it to a dealer i have confidence in, not where i purchased it. fiat Uk have been trying to assist and i realise they have procedures to follow. they have said to let the dealer look at it and if they find anything wrong which are linked to the noises i have heard then give the dealer chance to fix it and then if they still persist then they'll get a fiat uk tech guy to go and inspect the car. they have agreed to pay the insurance cost for te courtesy car while they have the car which is £50 as it'll be staying witht hem 5 days. So thats really kind of them. I do like the car andif i can get the knocking and grogging start challenge sorted I'll live with and accept that the steaming up is a quirk of the model. If i get to the bottom of the knocking noise then i'll post it on here as a know there is at least someone else with this problem. But thanks for the messages of support and those have brought ti back into perspective that its just a car at the end of the day. Happy new year guys.and thanks

This situation is very serious. As for the ssterring wheel locking up and you nearly driving into a wall. That is deadly serious so to speak. I would be like a dog with a bone. Dont let this go. Make loads of noice.
