Just hopped in the 500 to head home and after a few miles in traffic she went a bit funny.

The clutch pedal sunk in all by itself and I only have about a fifth of the total pedal travel. I can get it into first and that works but when you push the clutch it to slow down it doesn't fully disengage and I shudder to a halt. Crap.

*sigh*

Anyone else had this happen?

Off to the dealers we go........

I used to have a similar problem with the marea. If you hook your foot under the clutch pedal and lift it back to it's usual position does it then work as it should?
I think it was the clutch cylinder on mine but not completely sure as it never did it again after I had to swap gearboxes.

Hi There

Had this on a new uno some years ago, when i checked under the bonnet the clutch slave cylinder was hanging off, the two bolts holding it to the gearbox were only screwed in about two turns, Hope yours is as simple.

Beast,

I'll give that a go tomorrow when I get to work. I had a bastard of a day today. Work was a zoo, my phone died and then the 500 decided not to play nice. I'll definitely try this tomorrow.

Muttleysdad,

I was going to have a poke around looking for something obvious like this but in the pissing rain, wearing a suit I got as far as opening the bonnet when it suddenly dawned on me 'I have warranty, to hell with this, go home'. :)

thanks everyone for the suggestions. Hopefully its something simple as The Beast mentioned, at least then I can get her somewhere where I can have a proper look.

cheers
J

So today I rang Glyn Hopkin at St Albans (closest dealer to home) and described the problem. After reluctantly being dragged from the coma he was in, the service person I spoke to rather dismissively told me that I could bring it and they should be able to have a look at it from 1 oct.

So I rang the dealer I bought it from, Ancaster in Catford (closest dealer to where I lived when I bought it). They tried harder.

I spoke to the very pleasant and helpful James in service who listened to me and suggested I should get the AA to trailer it down to them and they'd have a look today.

Just spoke to him a few moments ago and he said there is air in the hydraulic system somewhere and to be safe they're replacing both cylinders and the seals and checking it over for me. He said it was possibly a faulty seal or a manufacturing fault. He also said it would likely be ready on Friday. He was very friendly and helpful which is exactly the same attitude that the salesman (Terry) at Ancaster had.

So boo Glyn Hopkins, Yay Ancaster

Pretty sure it's a master cylinder problem, I had mine replaced a couple of months ago. The gear box would lock in 1st at roundabouts / junctions and the only way of disengaging was to let it stall, became a bit embarrassing in heavy traffic as it looked as though I couldn't drive:)

yeh, we had the same few months back, new clutch cylinder and it was all sorted
