General The 500 Breaks out onto the American Freeways!

The "Fiat Freak" Salutes the 500, Sam, and Jim! Welcome!

I'm glad to know the car is safely on American soil. Yes, Sam had a much easier time of it than when we picked up the Panda two years ago. Jim, I remember driving to Kennedy airport in NYC to retrieve you from your airline flight after bringing Sam to the port of entry, and not even knowing what you looked like! Do you recall your first drive on the New Jersey turnpike as you followed me southward? I will never forget it.

This will be the 25th anniversary of Fiat FreakOut. I had no inkling of the event's potential to endure for a quarter-century when I started it those many years ago. It's ironic that Fiat FreakOut celebrates it's 25th anniversary as we mark the 25th anniversary of Fiat's exit from N. America. We at club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited deserve a lot of credit in keeping the Fiat flame lit as the company now ponders returning to North America with the very car you have shipped here (but likely NOT to be badged as a Fiat, but rather an "Abarth", as we'll get the Abarth version...and it will likely be sold via Alfa Romeo dealerships when that marque returns to the USA in 2010).

We will be honored to welcome you, Jim, and the Nuova 500, to Fiat FreakOut 2008! www.flu.org/ffo2008 We of club FLU couldn't not have a better friend on the right side of the Atlantic! I only wish you could bring all of your mates in the NIIMC and all across the UK with you!

Bobb,

Thanks for checking in with us on this thread and giving everyone a bit of background on Freakout and the last trip.

It was certainly amazing the first time I took the panda out on the Freeway, it felt so small and underpowered in traffic (that was before i had the carb set up properly for the 1108cc engine) but it made it the whole way from New York to Freakout in Detroit and then all the way to the West Coast and back again without hitch!

Hopefully the 500 takes after its older and wiser predecessor, lol!

Jim

Hello all. I have the car, and I have Jim's blessing to show it before ffo. If there are any Fiat fans in the greater NY area, email me at [email protected]. I can bring it over to the Americana in Manhasset in the morning on a Saturday or Sunday before the shops open, say 9AM.
It is at www.americanamanhasset.com (I can't post URL's yet!) :(

Oh, and all the talk about the Petrol, I would never put that little pup of a car in danger. I figured the highest octane at our US pumps would be fine (93 US). Turns out it was more than enough.

Let me say that this is a real labor of love for me. For all you wondering what the new 500 is like, let me assure you it has got to be the best car value on Earth. :) It induces swiveling heads and smiling faces everywhere it goes. And that is just the bystanders. Imagine DRIVING it.

I want one.

Sam
