why do you have to pay for some colour but not other
That's a question that gets asked a lot, and there isn't really an answer other than because the manufacturers can get away with it.

So many people have told me over the years that metallic paint doesn't actually cost any more than non-metallic, and less of it is needed to paint a car, that they can't all be wrong?

Maybe when metallic paint was first introduced it was more expensive, but as most cars are metallic nowadays the basic rules of economies of scale actually make it cheaper!

I can understand why pearlescent and lenticular colours cost more, but with metallic I think it's just the manufacturers cashing-in :(

should be ok if you look after it, probably one of the easier ones?
with dark colours (blues, blacks) unless your a complete physco with cleaning it you will get swirls etc from washing, which wont show nearly as much on a white.

One thing white is very vogue at the moment, its on lots of Mini's, some BMW's etc. which it might not be in a couple of years, but it is a classic colour on the 500.

Manufacturer's charge more for some colours to extract more £££ from you.

If you know what metallic is, then pearl is the same but with a different medium in the paint.

Generally metallics and pearls require a laquer coat that solids don't, although some solid colours are laquer over base.

same as above with this addition pearl also allows some of the light to pass though and reflect back from the surface below (base coat). different base coats give different effects. dont confuse it with chromaflair which has a full colour shift a special edition nissan micra came with chromaflair.
1 last thing to bear in mind is that a pearl painted car is harder to touch up and will usually result in a full panel having to be painted
