I've had my mileage flashing several times now. If I turn off the engine and restart it stops (like restarting a computer).

Has anyone else had this, and if so should I be worried.

Bet it's friggin Microsoft! :)

Yup, there was other thread here somewhere where many people said it was to do with 'proxy alignment needing resetting', so it might be that. I had the same thing, had the proxy alignment done and still had flashing mileage... so anyone with better ideas please come forward

I had flashing miles but then started to get fuel guage going funny, took it to the dealer who said its a faulty wiring connection somewhere behind the steering column,so she goes in tomorrow to get it fixed and I get a courtesy car for a couple of days, dont know whether the two are linked but will see if it happens again after the ' op'. will keep you posted:(

does it on my grande punto too take it back to dealer they will sort it out(y)

My 500 does the flashing mileage thing from time to time. It always stops flashing when you turn the ignition off and on again, and it doesn't seem to affect anything else at all, so I just ignore it. Back in the day when I ran Italian motorcycles, nothing electrical ever worked. The lights on my Ducati 350 never worked in all the time I had it, the battery self-destructed, and you just threw away the Magneti Marelli coil as a matter of course and put in a Lucas. As for the alternator, the least said the better. So I am actually amazed that all the little lights and gubbins on the 500 seem to be quite good :) Flashing mileage seems to reflect the Italian character of the thing without being too annoying.

Id be interested to know exactly what is happening to cause this, I know its proxy alignment etc but IF you leave it what could/does eventually happen?

If the Proxy gets too far out of alignment it will cause vibration which will eventually shake the welds in the engine bay apart causing the engine to drop out!

Preventative maintanence.
Touch in the chip before the panel rusts.
Get the hum sorted before it's a bang.
Align your Proxy before your engine falls out! (y)

I'd cure that problem with eproxy resin. But what does really happen? I'd like to know.

My mileage was flashing yesterday, I'd been driving about 10 mins before it started and it flashed for the rest of the journey (about another 5mins.

Not happened again though.

Took mine in last Friday for this and they have ordered a new dashboard for it

omfg don't go back to that dealer they are clueless it wont fix it unless they proxy it after fitting it witch incidentally it doesn't need anyway and as they havnt already i'm guessing they probably wont out of intrest just ask them after they do fit it weather they proxy alighned it and if they look at you blank say nothing walk out and get another dealer to do it under waranty

if the proxy alignment gets too far out of line everything on the car that uses the can network to operate anything will stop working until it is aligned again simple as that i'm not about to list the things that use the can net but it's not good when you cant use your lights windows and your dash doesn't show you your speed rpm and engine rpm temp and so on

if your car is doing this it's in your best interests to get it sorted straight away

it should be done on pdi

i dont know maybe time to name and shame

it's just it seems they are changing a dash pod because it was flashing and simply need a proxy alighnment

We dont really know the full facts (although I agree with what you say about proxy-alignment and this is more than likely the cause).........but its not right slagging other techs (ATA code of conduct;))
