Back on thread (ish).

I hear from a source close to MIRA where some testing has been taking place that there are some "cracking issues" with the block in the Arbarth 500 currently..

It's spelt Abarth :p

Can't see why there would be cracking issues with the block on the 500. It's the same engine that is used in higher tune in the GP Abarth as well as the Punto t-jet and the Bravo t-jet. The main difference between the Abarth engine and the t-jet engine is the multiair system but that's got nothing to do with the block. I don't see something with only 200nm of torque cracking it's block unless there's some sort of manufacturing fault.

The engine originally supposed to be appearing in the Abarths was the one now in the VXR Corsa. That has been having a few issues with the block. Don't know if it's been cracking or something else though.
The engine in the Abarth is a 1.4 and the one in the Corsa is a 1.6 is it not? I thought the t-jets were Fiat designed engines and the 1.6's were GM ones?

is it not just an "up to date" version of the uno turbo's 1.4 turbo engine

No it's a completely new engine. It's more closely related to the 1.4 16V found in the current range of Fiats than anything that has gone before.

Back when Fiat and GM were bosom buddies. GM were going to supply the VXR engine for the Abarth range. Testing had apparently even started in Italy. However it was not meant to be and Fiat then developed the T-Jet engines for their own use.

Or so legend has it. :)

My sister will be pleased about the VXR Corsa problems, she has just bought one.

But the Corsa VXR engine in the Abarth 500(y) 190bhp, that'll do nicely.

Not going to happen :p It would stamp on the toes of the GPA SS and it just aint happening :) Fiat will keep the 500 Abarth under the GP Abarth in terms of raw horsepower.

GP Abarth 150
500 Abarth 135bhp

Case in point :)

Also why buy a Mito GTA and pay more when a 500 with 190bhp would be just as fast.

I guess people can dream though

AFAIK the 1.4 turbo in the Abarth is very similar to the 1.4 in the Panda, 500 and GP + a turbo and Multiair.

Link suggests multilair is only for the 2 cylinder engines doesn't it?

Nope. Multiair is going to be rolled out across the range :) Multiair delivers more power and more economy. It's win win. Tell you what will be even better. The DDCT boxes that will be launched late next year will give around 10% better fuel efficiency over manuals. Couple that with multiair which gives about 10% more fuel efficiency over the same engine with normal valvegear and that's pretty darn good. Because it gives more power you can downsize the engine as well and get even better fuel efficiency for the same amount of power. I don't think you'll pay much more for Multiair engines but I reckon you'll pay a bit for a DDCT box over a manual.

For those that don't know DDCT stands for dual dry clutch transmissions so one clutch drives the odd gears and the other the even gears. So when you slot it into 1st the other gear cluster already has 2nd lines up and the clutch for the 1st cluster just needs to disengage and the other clutch engage and you're into 2nd. Because the clutches aren't wet like VW's DSG boxes it's also pretty efficient too.

Personally I'm holding out on buying a new car for another couple of years for these two technologies alone. More power, faster gearshifts and increased fuel efficiency. Win win I say!
