possibly not the right forum to say something like that?(n)

Why not? People are talking about sniggering at Mini owners and feeling all superior. Isn't that what Mini owners do? They think they're better than everyone because they have a Mini and the people here think they're better because they have a 500. Pot. Kettle. Black.

At the end of the day a car is a personal choice and as much as I think Mini drivers look silly that's their business. At the end of the day you've only bought a 500. You showed up at the dealership, specced up your car and handed over the cash or signed a finance agreement. It's not some exlcusive or anything.

Er, I don't remeber anyone claiming they were "exclusive" (not exlcusive).

Oooh I made a typo :)

It's remember not remeber btw ;)

My point is people are acting like it's some sort of exclusive club and talking about sniggering at Mini owners.

and you then come on slagging off 500 owners, like you said, pot, kettle, black!!!!!

YOU LOOSE & I WIN

It's lose.....

I'm not slagging off the owners. I'm merely saying if you don't like the way mini drivers act then don't act like them yourselves. I myself have test driven a 1.4 500 Sport twice although only because really wanted to drive a 100hp and it's the closest thing the dealers had. It's a nice enough car I'll admit. Just appreciate your cars and leave other people to appreciate their own cars. Just be happy that the 500 is a cool little car and the Mini is a junior real estate agents car. All I'm saying ;)

Yea, that would be me who started the thread....to a degree I do feel exclusive at the mo cos I've only seen two other 500's on the road in Plymouth. To me that's pretty exclusive !

Also I love sniggering at mini owners cos I can (y)

The thing is it's only a car. I agree it's a nice car but at the end of the day it's just an inanimate object. I could have had one yesterday if I'd wanted the one that the dealer offered me from stock but I want a Panda and don't want to buy just yet anyway.

If you want to argue like you have done so above. My girlfriend's Subaru Legacy Turbo is a lot more exclusive because we've only ever seen 3 on the road in the 5 years she's owned the car and that was when we went to Banbury to go on a tour of Prodrive. At the end of the day she could laugh at people for paying over 10 grand for a 1.4 500 and having it do 0-60 in 10.5 while her 14 year old car does 0-60 in 6.5 and she only paid a couple of grand for it. But she doesn't. She likes her car for what it is and doesn't poo-poo other people for liking their cars for what they are to them.

At one stage Mini owners would have been part of an exclusive little club as well but as time has gone by they just look so cliched. The very same will probably happen to the 500 in time. Doesn't mean you can't still enjoy your car, just means that there might be other dimwitted people out there sniggering at you because everyone has a 500 at the time. Just remember the 500 has only been out for a few months now. With the way it's selling it won't be long before you see a lot more of them out there.

I'll repeat it again. At the end of the day it's an inanimate object.

its the 500 section of the fiat forum. no one has gone over to the bigi forums and insulted them.
a post like that to 500 owners on their own forum could be seen as trolling

I simply pointed out that a lot of people are acting just like the people they are sniggering at. It's not trolling. It's just pointing out the obvious. I like Fiat's. But is it wrong to tell people not to be so elitist about the car they own when they complain about other people being like that?

but bigi drivers think they have some thing that they havent, even real mini owners dont like it when they show up at mini events.
500 drivers have more to be proud of, they are driving an icon of italian motoring that has been going strong for decades.
and again they can say what they like about bigi owners on their own section as there is nothing in the forum rules against it.
but there is a rule for slating members here on here

Oh come on. The new 500 is not really that much like the old one. My dad has a 60's 500f sitting in his garage fully restored so I believe I'm qualified to comment on that. The engine is in the wrong place and it's FWD which the original wasn't. Plus the new 500 is far from the basic car that the original was. I'd go out on a limb and actually say that the Panda is more like the original 500 concept (cheap, no frills motoring) in every way other than looks of course.

I mean the Mini is at least front engined and FWD like the old one. Yes it's bigger but so is the 500 as well.

The 500 is a great little car but don't use the "The Mini is nothing like the old Mini" defence because the 500 is just as bad an offender in that sense. I tried to convince my dad to take a test drive in the 500 because I think it's a nice car but he refuses to on the grounds that it's not a proper 500.

sorry but 306maxi is so far in the right here its untrue, double standards being shown makes me giggle :D

p.s. i see lots of legacys about, but then living near prodrive helps :p

I must admit I'm not much of a Subaru fan but I have a soft spot for legacy's. The turbo is such an unassuming car other than the little intercooler scoop and tiny rear spoiler yet it goes like stink. I'm going to try and convince the g/f to take the Subaru off the road and get her a little runaround (500 perhaps? ;) ) and do a bit of restoration work and turn it into a trackday car for us to both enjoy.

Thanks for the backup. I don't hate 500's or anything, in fact quite the opposite. I'd just hate to see the 500 turn out to be viewed in the same light as the Mini is these days.

not slating members, defending the bigi and using comments made about the bigi and showing how they can also apply to the 500.

Cheers yet again for the understanding and help.

ffs the 500 has been in production for decades, it went from round to square and now back to round again. but has always been made by fiat.

the bigi is just a name been used by a totally different manufacturer

Listen you've taken this thread off topic. I'm just saying that people should treat people how they would like to be treated. My girlfriend likes 2cv's. If Citroen bring a 2cv remake out in a few years should she go around sniggering at 500 owners because their cars are so common and are not the same as the original while she goes around driving in her 2cv which isn't a deathtrap in a crash, drives properly in crosswinds and so on?

At the end of the day if the British car industry wasn't so crap and weighed down by unions in the 70's and 80's then the Mini would be made in Britain. I don't blame the owners for that.

The Cinquecento isn't a 500 anyway. It has the same name when translated in Italian but it's about as much a 500 as a Peugeot 407 is a 406 which is a 405 which is a 404 which is a 403. It's merely a naming convention. Doesn't mean the cars are the same. A mini is a mini and a 500 is a 500.

Well, just to add something here. I have Subaru Legacy (not the turbo though :() and just got the little 500 and they both have their uses. One is perfect for the city other for long journeys and off road. I love them both for different reasons. I guess that all the car owners love their cars (some more, some less) for their own reasons and no slagging off is going to change that. Saying that, I'm SO glad to have gotten the 500 instead of Mini (although I wasn't even considering it). To tell the truth I just saw the 500 and fell in love with it. With petrol prices on the up, as well as the tax and insurance it wasn't to hard to justify the purchase. Subaru stays parked most days :D I do have to say that the car I find so badly designed and just plain rip off of the 'retro' concept is the new Beatle... but then again, it is just my opinion...
