Folks

on the "other" 500 forum, a poster has complained that he had no spare wheel delivered with his new 500. All the 500s I have looked at certainly had a spare wheel, and the space saver spare is listed as standard fitment on all models on the Fiat website and in the brochure. Has anyone here not had a spare come with their new car?

I think the 500 does come with a spare except when you have 16" wheels. The reason is that the spare 16" won't fit in the spare well. So they supply you with gunk & a pump (a bit like my civic).
Not ideal & enough to make me think twice about 16" wheels:confused:

Hmmm.

This doesn't make much sense. The 1.4 Sport demo at Vospers has 16" wheels and it does have a spare. All the space saver spares are 14", but this is no problem as the rolling radius is almost the same for 14, 15 and 16 wheels (the tyre profile gets lower as the rim gets bigger).

perhaps models with 16" as standard dont get a spare ,but those paying for an upgrade retain their standard fit spare?
I thought all 16" alloys were optional, the Lounge & Sport coming with 15" alloys as standard?

I upgraded from standard 15'' alloys to 16'' O spoke alloys (420) and I most definitely have a spare!

Thought I should recycle this thread from March 2008 just to verify the following:

I'm upgrading at some point from 15" to 16" wheels, and wanted to know whether carrying round the space saver tyre I currently have would become pointless when I get round to replacing current wheels. Or as John Smith says it won't be a problem.
The owner handbook says "The small spare wheel (if provided for) is specific for your car." I don't fully understand the broken English here. Does that mean my particular specification of 500 (i.e. 15" sport alloys) or more generally - the 500 as a car itself.

I should think it's not particular to rim size.

Polystyrene? :dead:

Yes, the Abarth comes with a polystyrene block instead of a spare - although I'm not sure how much use that would be!! :D It contains an air compressor and some tyre weld stuff in case of a puncture, and space for the handbook and wheel nuts etc - but is no use if there's a big hole or blow out!
You can drive with different sized wheels if it is only temporary - i.e so you can complete your journey and get your normal road wheel fitted, as maxi says within certain speeds and distances.

Our Vectra have 19" factory option wheels and the space saver is 16" with a very small tyre, so when we had to use the space saver, the car dipped in that corner. Trouble is a 19" wheel or equivilant wouldn't fit in the wheel well in the boot!

I'd like a spare with my Abarth because I had a clio 182 which didn't have a spare (just lots of exhaust back boxes instead!) and I had a blow out with the tyre right off the rim, on back roads in Norfolk at 7am. Luckily I kept a spare (at home as nowhere in the car for it at all) so had to get my bf to come back from his way to work, collect the wheel from home and come and find me, otherwise the car wasn't going anywhere!
I've got a spare set of Abarth wheels now, but they don't fit in the spare wheel well (17") so need a standard space saver... if it will fit over the Abarth brakes...

The problem isn't really the size of the rim, it's the size of the wheel itself.

If you've got no spare you're best off just calling the AA to trailer you home or take you somewhere where you can get a tyre. I measured the wheel well and a full size rim with a tyre should fit?
