Fiat claim they took orders for 6000 Fiat 500s within a few hours of the 21 January launch.:cry:

FIAT A LAUNCHES The 500 ON The BRITISH MARKET
FIAT launched the 500 on January 21 to the United Kingdom and receipt more than 6 000 orders in a few hours for the model.
" After the success of Punto, we intend to sell 18 000 to 20 000 specimens of the 500 per annum in the United Kingdom ", declared M. Lorenzo Sistino,
</H1>There's under 180 UK Fiat dealers in the country, so that means dealers took an average of about 33 orders per dealership.

I'm sure the quoted figure includes all the 500s ordered before the launch as well.

Manufacturers often "ignore" pre-orders until the official launch date of a new car to make it look like the launch was more successful than it actually was. Not really lying, just manipulating the figures a bit.

My local Alfa dealer had 12 orders before the launch including mine :) and the FIAT that they were through another 20 odd, so that's 32 pre Launch. They then took "another 18" in the week before the Launch.

Don't know if these were included in that 20 though ;) but 32 pre launch is pretty good going and based upon this it looks like the figures stack up, especially as they were taking orders on the Launch night and were bound to be taking more after the Launch.

Obviously, any company/organisation will include "pre Launch" orders in the Launch figures, as these are a bonus. How else would you count them?

I can't see anything underhand or manipulative in that, especially as they want to sell cars and promote the product. Standard business peactice I would say? Look what happened when the I-phone came out? I bet a few of those were pre-orders (y)

I don't really get why you're suprised? The press interest has been huge, toting it as THE car of 2008. Of course Fiat are going to sell thousands before and on the day of launch.

yes...as the saying goes, "well they would say that, wouldn't they?" (!)

I was going to start a thread asking the question "how are new 500 sales going?" as I was talking to one dealer who has only so far sold (inc mine) 5 . And one of the other depot's has only sold 1. This then begs the question: have we been all swept away with the Hype? Or is my dealer performing poorly?
I was expecting them to of retailed 20 plus after a cracking launch night. Not that I'm too fussed as It guarantees that there won't be too many 500's about in Cornwall for a while, But then I'll have no one to flash my lights too:cry:

Cheers

Yoshi

The dealer I have just odered mine from claims he has had his allocation for the year increased by 20 due to poor sales dealers not selling their allocation, and he has had orders for approx 60 ( inluding pre launch orders) not including mine.

I heard that they have 16K units for this year, and Italy can sell the same car twice over so have HUGE waiting list. Its all a matter of sorting the wheat from the Chaf

Think about it; recession looming, credit crunch, no one can afford anything....but no wants a KIA either so.....ooo that £7900 fiat looks nice...economical too....I'll have one of them please!
