I have just bought a used fiat 2012 500 sport and hope I made a good choice

First question. My fiat is a 6 speed auto and now know what the plus and minus mean , but what does the gear do when in drive you slide it to the right position do, thanks

Actually it does nothing at all. It just puts it in the mode that allows you to change gears like a manual. (+) goes up a gear (-) goes down (6 to 5). You can not hurt it with a wrong gear selection, transmission will not let you.
