As this forum has been invaluable since I bought 'Minty' our 72 L, I thought I'd post how I solved this problem. I realise to the experienced amongst you this is probably common sense/knowledge.

For mere mortals like me, however, this was a learning process and If the below helps someone else then great. I bought the fiat to learn more about cars and it's certainly taught me a few things already!

Problem:
The dashboard illumination stopped working, so did the green light to tell you the lights are on! Outside only one of the taillights and sidelights were working.

Solution:
I checked the bulbs in question and all looked good. I then checked the fuses and fuse 6 was blown. More worryingly not one fuse was the correct amperage. All were 16amp with the exception of fuse 6 which was 25amp

I replaced fuse 6 with the same 25amp and it blew straight away as soon as I turned the lights on.

I then unplugged everything to do with the lights. This included: the headlights, sidelights, tail lights, the red and white connections that go to the dash binacle. I inspected the connections and cleaned them with connection cleaner where neccesary.

I then put a 8amp fuse in (the correct amperage) and plugged each thing in one at a time. After each connection I turned the lights on and waited for the fuse to blow. It didn't...

When I got to the headlights I noticed that they were loose in their housing, which could have been causing an earthing issue. I rectified this and continued to the point where everything was plugged in, on and not blowing the fuse.

Lastly, I replaced all the wrong fuses with the correct ones, one by one. Testng the lights, horn etc after each time. Minty is now running the correct fuses and so far not blowing them!

References:
The user manual (uploaded elsewhere in the forum) was invaluable for knowing what the fuses did and how to remove the lights etc. I would post the URL but being a newbie I haven't got the permissions to do this yet (I think I can after 5 posts).

I also had a Haynes manual which reported differently from the user manual!
