While out for a drive in the car today it developed a strange screeching when moving just off of the straight ahead position of the steering wheel, it sounds like a dry bushing Looking underneath I found evidence of oil leakage from the steering box which I know is common. I’m going to remove the steering box but would appreciate any points to look out for in particular. TIA.

My old steering idler arm bushes were the cause of a creaking or grinding noise

If it has a old style non electric power steering check the fluid level
Seen people condemn the gear box when it was low fluid on the steering
