After a short drive my zelmot is leaking oil from the hole in the bottom of the distributor. Any clues what may be wrong or what seal needs replacing

Thanks

Hi Deckwood, My 500 uses this system so I've had a look at my spare. if you are getting oil running out of the lower holes that locate the inside mechanism it can only come from one source - the engine. I have never had this problem at all, but reckon that there must be an oil seal inside the lower body above the camshaft gear. You will need to either drive out the roll pin holding the gear onto the shaft and see what oil seal you find, or get an overhaul carried out or if you're feeling flush replace the whole thing????? One point of note is that I have never seen any spare parts advertised for these dizzies apart from points and condenser. (n)(n)(n)
Ian.

Thanks for the reply and the great pictures, it did concern me when I couldn't find any spare parts of sort, looks like I'll add a new one to my next order.
Cheers

I rebuilt my six spare distributors recently and there should be a Tufnol type washer on the spindle and in contact with the inside of the main body. That is the nearest thing to a seal on the distributor and it had worn away on most of the ones I worked on. You cannot buy the part so I bought a sheet of suitable material and made my own. I have never heard of an oil leak from inside the distributor, I think you should investigate more before you rush into buying a new unit.

Hi deckwood, Had a think about your problem and wonder if you have any leaking pushrod tubes?????? Is any oil splashing onto the dizzy from the thermostat housing???? and thus working it's way under the cap??????

Thanks Toshi, is this inside the distributor or above the gear on the outside. The oil definitely seems to be coming up from inside the engine, there isn't any oil over any other part of engine or block. There is just a drop or two from the hole in bottom of distributor when you stop the car.
I was having some timing issues recently and there was a bit of vertical slop in the distributor shaft and lots of oil inside. I cleaned it all out and replaced with an electronic points set.

Inside the distributor and I guess intended to take the thrust from the spiral drive. The vertical slop could indicate that it has worn away.
