A while back I had to have my '71 500F towed home after my dynamo gave up on me. The tilting flatbed truck showed up and the driver attached a cable to the front end leaf spring and towed the car up onto the flatbed. I was not sure at the time if that was the right place to attach the cable, but I didn't know any better, and it has caused me to wonder ever since whether there might be the better place to attach a tow rope if I ever find myself needing to do that again.
Any opinions?

When i initially had my 500 I winched it onto the trailer with a strap that I made up that went round the front spring in 2 places---outside each of the spring mounting blocks. When I had the front of the car rebuilt (due to very poor, and dangerous, repairs at some time) I had a plate made up just like the 126 has. This plate connects the front panel and the main bulkhead. I then had the repair-shop weld a towing ring to that plate---now I just clip the winch hook onto the towing ring.

I found an image of the F126 front end underside from the workshop manual. Is the plate you speak of the inverted 'V' shaped part in the top centre of the image?

Yes, that is the part---it is welded (in my case) to the lifting point at the front of the car and to the underside of the spring-stud box at the rear of the bracket. I then had a 'U' shaped ring welded to the bracket, and as I previously mentioned, I can now just attach the winch's hook to the 'U' piece.
