Has anyone had any experience with the non genuine replica FZD's for sale on some of the popular parts supplier sites?

Yes, I do----I have one in my workshop. The quality is VERY poor and they are "not quite right". I and a colleague of mine bought a pair at the same time, and both have spent a lot of frustrating time getting them to run properly and rectify the rubbish quality. We THINK that the top of the carb is at fault (among other things!) and have both had to find pukka FZD tops to try and rectify the faults. DO NOT TOUCH THEM!! What would be better is to try and find a 30/24. These are ALL original, and unless you have a fairly well tuned 652 engine (or bigger) the slightly smaller version will do you well. The 30/24 versions are still findable, 2nd hand, on e-bay. If you buy just a carb, you will need to purchase the dedicated inlet manifold and specific head nut/studs---they are available from a number of the continental suppliers---get the best you can.

Great thanks for the reply, sounds like you saved me a headache

I have never had my hands on one of the replica FZD carbs but the fact that the complete kit is selling for less than some original good used ones raises suspicions. I have quite a few of these pass through my hands over the years and some have been easy to deal with, just checking them over and replacing seals or gaskets. Others can be a nightmare when they have parts missing or worn. Parts for these are impossible to get in some instances and you literally have to scour the world markets.
There have been two on eBay for months now, one 32/28 at £590 that has parts missing and another 30/24 at £170 that has everything missing.
Often the smaller ones are half of a twin carb set up that were used on Italian Innocenti Minis. They will fit the 500 but work to do.
