All,

After searching the forum and elsewhere for a 'one-size-fits-all' alternator swap tutorial, I decided to piece together my own into what I hope can be a single-source document for anyone going down this route.

Lots of pictures and text walk the dog through the process and highlight some lessons learned. Attached as a PDF.

I thought it might make a decent sticky thread if the mods agree. I'm not a technical writer by trade, so I welcome any critiques you have.

Cheers,
Matt

It's impressive when people take the time to help other people in this way. The part about modifying the cowling will be particularly useful to some owners.

I would add that the B+ cable should have a rubber cover and the D+ cable was originally restrained by a spring clip as shown on my image. Both cables originally had protective sleeving.

The world of 14+ volts is a good one. :)

Good point. I didn’t have one handy and didn’t think of it at the time. I’ll put one on my shopping list to grab during the next parts run.

This is the original spring clip fitment on the alternator. I guess designed to keep the wires well back from the pulley.

A rubber-lined 'P' clip, turned to face inwards would do the job perfectly adequately. The spring clip that Fiat used would have been a lot cheaper to make (and did the job) than a 'P' clip which is why I suspect Fiat used the simple spring clip.

Hello,
I have been using your tutorial as a bible for my alternator conversion.
Thanks for taking the time to make it.👌
Today I tried to test my alternator with a bulb, battery, voltage regulator and a drill.
After the first test I realized that I did not conect the voltage regulator to the right pins. After that I put everything in the right way but the bulb was still not lighting up.
My questions are:
-could I have fried the voltage regulator?
-or even if the voltage regulator is dead I should have 12V on the D+?
Thanks.
