Technical fitting rev counter

Hi hope someone can help I am trying to find a Tachometer for my 500L fitted with a 652 126 engine all the ones i come across seem to be for 4 cylinders engines.
Can i use a Tachometer for a motorbike? if so is it easy to wire it up or would it need a mechanical drive? I have 123 ignition.

I have n"Abarth style" instrument cluster in my car, and in it is a tacho for a 2-cyl engine that is NOT a bike instrument. It is a "SMITHS CLASSIC SEMI-PROGRAMMABLE" and can be purchased from:--"Cearbont Automotive Instruments Ltd" (www.caigauge.com). It does 2+4+6+8 cylinder engines and is altered to the number of cylinders it is required for by a number of small switches in the base of the tacho.

I installed a digital dash with requires a 4 cyclinder tach signal (which is taken from the negatve of the coil output)

So yes, you could use your favourite 4 cyc tach if you so wanted to.

I would advise that you don't use a motorcycle tach, as their range is quite high, 0 - 14000RPM, so the granularity is small and you'll not see much movement on the dial.

Soooooooo, what exactly does an "Abarth style" instrument cluster look like?

Ronstox; I have never had any success at putting pictures on to the Forum--if you contact me directly-- [email protected] I will send you some pictures of my instrument cluster. On the 'L'model with the big instrument cluster, they are a real P.I.T.A. to fit--you have to cut quite a bit of the dash away, and where you do have to cut makes it impossiblt to refit the original instrument cluster-- the 'D', 'F' and 'R' models with the small instrument cluster make it much easier to fit an "Abarth" style cluster. My cluster has a tacho, electronic speedo, oil temp gauge and oil pressure gauge along with various warning lights. 'Mechanical' speedos are available, it is just that my kit came with an electronic speedo in it.

Oh, that looks nice. Thanks hobbler & lazylobster. I have a 500F and I really like the original instrument cluster, but I would also like more information about the engine in real time. I'll probably go with something like evmaniac's or lazylobster's solution

HI Ronstox, for my LCD display, all in parts around £110. Mostly electical wiring.t-piece for the oil pressure sensor to keep orginal working on the round speedo. Had to tap the oil pan for the oil temp sensor. What I like about it is, that you can unplug it and remove the suction mount and revert back to original look in approx 1 min.

Both "FD Ricambi" and "Passione" sell a take off that allows for both a pressure and a warning light sensor to be fitted to the same take-off---eliminates the need to drill intothe sump if all you want is a pressure read-out (and the 'low-pressure' idiot light). If you wanted temperature and pressure, sensors are probably available to allow for this, but possibly at the loss of the 'low-pressure' light.

I have got a tee piece that does just that, provision for the standard switch and a sensor. Going spare if I can find it ?

There are few combined oil pressure/temperature sensors out there, but the cheapest I've seen is ~$100. With one of those you could make due with only a tee (and not drilling out the pan). You'd get circulating temp instead of bottom of pan temp. A little more accurate depending on how exacting you are.

Feel free do do that Andrew. I don't know of anybody restoring a 124 sport/spyder at the moment, but I do know of a couple of places that do this sort of work, so will happily contact them for you. Send them direct to me.
